Jumpstarts 101 An introduction to Ovid Jumpstarts

Objectives Answer the question “What is a Jumpstart?” Explain uses and benefits of Jumpstarts. Show how Jumpstarts are built. Demonstrate the Ovid Jumpstart tool. Answer any remaining questions. Offer to take questions as they come up

What is a Jumpstart ? A Jumpstart is a loaded URL created by an administrator as a shortcut to a common task within the Ovid Web interface. They are sometimes referred to as deep links. What does a jumpstart look like? http://ovidsp.ovid.com/ovidweb.cgi?T=JS&PAGE=toc&NEWS=n&D=ovft&AN=00043790-199608000-00000&ID=xxxxxx&PASSWORD=xxxxxx

Why use a jumpstart ? Jumpstart URLs are highly versatile. Depending on the elements, Jumpstarts can perform various tasks such as: Logging in Selecting a database Executing a saved search Displaying a full-text article

Ovid’s IP Validation feature. Jumpstarts Save Time Creative administrators use the Ovid Jumpstart feature to save time they might normally spend Assigning user IDs and passwords Training users how to access Ovid Correcting users common searching errors and much more… *Jumpstarts work especially well in conjunction with Ovid’s IP Validation feature.

Using a Jumpstart URL An Ovid Jumpstart URL can be typed into the address bar of a browser or displayed as links on a web page.

Getting Started Every Ovid Jumpstart must start with the same opening syntax: http://ovidsp.ovid.com/ovidweb.cgi?T=JS This directs the user to our ovidsp server Calls up a script called ovidweb.cgi Tells the script this is a Jumpstart

The Next Step:Element Tags http://ovidsp.ovid.com/ovidweb.cgi?T=JS &PAGE=toc&NEWS=n&D=ovft&AN= 00043790-199608000-00000 All search elements that follow the opening syntax start with an ampersand (&): Notice that the element name following the ampersand is always in ALL capital letters *Jumpstarts URLS must be one continuous line with no spaces

The Only Required Element Tag &PAGE= This element tells the jumpstart which page you want to land on Elements in green taught in Jumpstarts 201 Fun Fact: The search elements are not read from left to right but all at once so the order of the elements does not matter. dblist Sends users to the Database Selection Screen main Sends users to the Main Search page of a selected database toc Sends users to the table of contents of a selected journal titles Shows users search results in Titles Display format fulltext Shows users a selected Ovid Full Text article Etc… …

Common Elements Tags http://ovidsp.ovid.com/ovidweb.cgi?T=JS&PAGE=toc&MODE=ovid &NEWS=n&D=ovft&ID=yourid&PASSWORD=yourpassword&DBC=n &AN=00043790-199608000-00000 &MODE= Choices are “ovid” or “easy”; default is ovid &NEWS= Use “n” to cause Jumpstart to skip the News Screen &D= Indicates a database desired, using the database short name(s). See short codes here. &ID= User ID, such as “abc999” (not needed for IP validated) &PASSWORD= User password (not needed for IP validated) &DBC= Use “n” to prevent users from changing databases &AN= Indicates the Accession Number of a single journal item you want to display

Look what you’ve learned http://ovidsp.ovid.com/ovidweb.cgi?T=JS&PAGE=toc&NEWS=n&D=ovft &AN=00043790-199608000-00000 &ID=xxxxxx&PASSWORD=xxxxxx
