Structured searching and search filters 13/04/2016 Filter development The crux of effective filter development is the selection and combination of appropriate search terms Filter development has gone through 3 generational phases: 1st generation: search terms are subjectively derived, based on the searchers background and expertise, and knowledge of the database structure. The search is not validated. 2nd generation: search terms derived as above. The filter is validated against a ‘gold standard’ of known relevant records. Generations of filter development 3rd generation: search terms objectively derived through frequency analysis of a gold standard. The filter is validated against a (different) gold standard. Gold Standard identification Included studies Cochrane Review Here is an example of how we can identify and collect gold standard publications for developing a pharmacological treatment of psychotic depression filter or search strategy. Starting with a Cochrane review, we turn to the included studies – ie. studies that had been deemed to be of sufficient quality for inclusion in this review Using text-mining tools for search filter development and designing search strategies

Gold Standard identification Find in Medline Add to My Projects We then find these studies in the database for which we are developing the search or filter. Using Find Citation mode, we add studies to a project folder. From here I’ll give a live demonstration of how to mine these references using the Ovid Reminer tool, then I’ve got another collection of citations for you to use.
