Departmentalized Subject Areas Ms. Dart: Social Studies and Science Dr. Pecorella: ELA (Homeroom and Hasbrouck) Ms. Hasbrouck: Math Ms. Auricchio: ELA (Homeroom and Dart) *Ms. Weaver will work with Dr. Pecorella’s homeroom class during ELA and math blocks.

Integrated Co-Teaching Model Dr. Pecorella and Ms. Weaver will be this year’s co-teachers Fifth year the district is using a co-teaching model We cater to ALL different learning styles and abilities Differentiation is the norm

Responsibilities Students are responsible for: Following classroom rules Completing all homework and classroom assignments neatly and on time Making up any work missed due to absences (use the web site to check) Respecting themselves and others Being prompt -the bell rings at 8:10! Being prepared Being active learners! Accepting responsibility for actions

Parent-Teacher Collaboration Please make sure homework is complete. You do not need to check over every question; we will go over it in class. Test dates and other important dates will be found on the class webpage calendars. Please send an absence note/late note/bus note every time. 5th Grade NYS Common Core State Test Dates English Language Arts Wednesday, April 11th-Thursday, April 12th Mathematics Wednesday, May 2nd -Thursday, May 3th

STAR Assessments The district will continue to use STAR reading and math assessments to assist in collecting data and monitoring a child’s progress. It is a computer-based assessment from Renaissance Learning. It will give us the ability to pinpoint each child’s reading and math levels so that we may further meet the individual needs of our students.

Extra Help Sessions will begin the week of October 2nd Parents of students who are invited will be notified of days and times by the classroom teacher

Anchor Activities Research-based activities that provide opportunities to extend learning for enrichment purposes Completed over an extended period of time to enhance problem-solving skills Activities will be available in all subject areas and will focus on curriculum development

Allergy Awareness No food for fifth grade classroom celebrations, including birthdays For birthdays, children are welcome to bring in non-food items (such as pencils, erasers, etc.)

Reading Reading, writing, listening, and speaking according to NYS Standards Reading Street-a reading series in its fifth year of implementation that encompasses all facets of ELA Whole class mini-lessons, small group and individual instruction, independent reading, guided reading, fresh reads, Scholastic News, Time for Kids, strategy lessons, leveled readers, a variety of genres and read alouds are part of each week

Reading Street Assessments Formative and summative assessments will be administered to the students throughout the year. Formative assessments may include: fresh reads, leveled readers, Sleuth magazine, Scholastic News, Time for Kids, Group work, Close-read questions, and mini-projects. Summative assessments include tests on select passages and skills.

Writing Writing is taught as a process, not simply to achieve a product Types of writing include: text-based responses, genre pieces, book projects and projects across all curriculum areas Celebrations and presentations for published work Checklists for revising and editing Rubrics used for grading

Spelling, Grammar, & Vocabulary Spelling-no formal spelling tests. Assessed through writing workshop and weekly center work. Grammar-taught through writing workshop; projects to reinforce concepts Vocabulary- “Amazing Words”, words from reading selections, read alouds, and independent books

Science (with Ms. Dart) Life Science Earth science Chapter tests Body systems Classification Plant and animal growth Ecosystems Earth science Weather Oceans Outer space Chapter tests Projects DNA labs and Greenkill!

Science Lab classes will include inquiry based hands-on experiences with the focus on STREAM: Science-Technology-Research-Engineering-Art-Math Through various activities and challenges, students will ask questions, plan, create, improve and communicate their ideas. Social Studies (with Ms. Dart) The Integrated Social Studies/English Language Arts Curriculum for the Grades K-6 project received its impetus from the Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES Curriculum Council, and was developed by teachers during curriculum encouraging higher order thinking involving collaborative learning using informational sources that cannot be found elsewhere or are not as rich engaging the research spirit infusing video clips utilizing real-time data utilizing interactive whiteboards effectively having real world connections allowing for online publishing or input from others Ronnie Social Studies Practices: Gathering, Using and Interpreting Evidence Chronological Reasoning Economics and Economic Systems Comparison and Contextualization
