Consonant alternation: Silent and Sounded Spelling Sort 11 Consonant alternation: Silent and Sounded

Silent and Sounded Consonants Sometimes related words have silent and sounded consonants. An example is sign and signature. These words are related in meaning but the g is silent in the word sign and it makes a sound in the word signature.

Bomb Something that explodes. The final b is silent. The bomb was dropped on the enemies ship.

Bombard To attack with bombs. The second b makes a sound. The Japanese bombarded Pearl Harbor.

Hasten To move or act swiftly. The t is silent. He needs to hasten and get home.

Haste Swiftness of motion or speed. The t makes a sound. The children ran with haste to school.

Limb A part that sticks out from the whole. The b is silent. The tree limb fell because it was so heavy.

Limber Bending easily; flexible. The b makes a sound. The gymnast was very limber.

Moisten To make or become wet. The t is silent. I will use chap stick to moisten my lips.

Moist Moderately or slightly wet. The t makes a sound. The brownies were very moist.

Resign To give up an office or position. The g is silent. I will resign my position as teacher.

Resignation A formal statement giving up an office or position. The g makes a sound. President Nixon sent his resignation to the Secretary of State.

Crumb A small particle of bread or cake that has been broken off. The b is silent. The bread crumbs will be used to make the cornbread.

Crumble To fall into small pieces. The b makes a sound. The cake crumbled when I sliced it.

Muscle Tissue in the body that produces movement. The c is silent The man has a lot of muscle in his back.

Muscular Having well developed muscles. The c makes a sound. The body builders were very muscular.

Design To plan or fashion artistically. The g is silent. The design was very colorful.

Designate To nominate or select for a duty. The g makes a sound. The coach will designate a captain for the soccer team.

Soften To make softer. The t is silent. Snuggle makes our clothes soft.

Soft Smooth and agreeable to the touch. The t makes a sound. The bunny pillow was extremely soft.

Column A vertical row or list. The n is silent. The paper had two columns.

Columnist The writer or editor of a newspaper or magazine. The n makes a sound. The columnist was writing about the earthquake in California.
