In depth textual analysis of Brick’s O.T.S.

Characters In O.T.S we are introduced to three of the characters. The first being Brendan Frye (Shown as background). The second being Emily Kostich. Although your introduced to her (because she speaks on the phone to Frye), you don’t see her alive in the O.T.S. This creates mystery and curiosity to who she is. You do however see a woman dead in storm drain at the beginning of the OTS. Which makes the audience assume this is her, because it says two day preciously after the scene , then her being driven away in car. The identity of the driver is kept hidden during the OTS. The only shot of him you see is this one.

Mise-en-scene Setting The setting/location of Brick is in the outskirts of a city. This is typical of a thriller film. Having it set in a city, makes the audience think that this could happen to them, thrilling on a psychological level. Having it set in a city makes the characters seem more relatable because a lot of the audience themselves will live in city's. This represents them as usual, ordinary people.

Lighting The colours and lighting of the O.T.S are very De-saturated. There are a lot of greys and blues, this is a generic trait of the thriller Film genre. Different colours mean different things for example pink could imply love and green could suggest go. Also lighting creates different moods and atmospheres. In Brick they use low key lighting to create darkness. In Brick they use de-saturated colouring to make the film appear to be more colder and lifeless, this is because when a body has been dead for a while it starts to turn blue.

Camera Work/angles/shots Extreme Close Up – Its used to show the emotion of the character through their eyes. They say the eyes are a window into the soul, so its no surprise they use a ECP to convey this. Close up – This is used to show detail and the clothing of the character. Long Shot - This is used to show the character and their surroundings. Its effective at establishing where the film is set

Sound https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nd0_LYXwGro There is also Diegetic sounds, they use ambient sound around these scenes. You can hear school children as the character approaches, as well as his footsteps. Throughout the beginning of the opening scenes we hear non-diegetic sound. (It sounds like a bell/chime ringing.) Sound that has been added during post production. It is also Pleonastic sound because it sounds quite chilling and sad. Whilst its playing were shown a young woman's dead which is chilling and sad. Reinforcing what we see on screen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nd0_LYXwGro
