Chandler UIL Tryouts! What is UIL? All Allen ISD elementary schools will be putting together contestants to compete against one another, testing their knowledge during academic events January 20th at the Allen High School. Tryouts? UIL is a competition and since we have many students who want to participate we have tryouts to build the strongest Chandler contestants possible. We encourage every student to try out and we strive to make it a positive experience whether they make it or not! Students will be selected and coached by a Chandler teacher! Commitment? If your child is selected to represent Chandler in one of the categories it is important to attend the after school practices (usually once a week) and be present on competition day (Saturday, January 20th) from around 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Coaches will contact you about which day will be practice day. We are looking for students who are 100% committed! Can my child compete in multiple events? Since the competitions take place at the same time, students can only compete in one event. The exception being, the writing competition. It takes place on Thursday Dec. 7th at Chandler, so if selected for the writing team and another team you will be able to do both! Check out the categories on the back of this page, fill in the permission slip below and return to your homeroom teacher before September 15th or email Pamela.Moore@allenisd.org with the information below. Coaches will contact you with tryout information at a later date! Please write clearly and return to your homeroom teacher by Friday, Sept. 15th Student Name:____________________________________ Grade ________________ Homeroom Teacher:_____________________________ Name of category (s) your child will like to try out for _________________________________ Parent Email:_________________________________ Phone #________________________

Chandler UIL Categories Music Memory – (grades 3-6) Each grade will have 5 students, plus 2 alternates. The focus of the Music Memory contest is an in-depth study of fine pieces of music literature taken from a wide spectrum of music genres to expose students to great composers, their lives and their music. Number Sense (grades 4-6) Each grade will have 3 students represented. Students will be given a 10-minute, fill-in-the-blank test which they must complete without doing calculations on paper or on a calculator (the ultimate mental math competition). Spelling (grades 3-6) The spelling contest is designed to give students in grades 3, 4, 5, and 6 exposure to a wide variety of vocabulary words. We will have 3 students per grade level compete in this contest. Students will write down words given by the pronouncer on their paper at a rate of approximately five words per minute. Oral Reading (grades 4-6) Each grade will have 3 students who will read a selection of poetry to a panel of judges. This category is perfect for kids with lots of personality! Storytelling (grades 2-3) Each grade will choose 3 students. Contestants in the second and third grades shall listen to a storyteller read a brief story (between 600 and 1100 words long) only once, and then retell that story in their own words before a judge or judges.  Creative writing (grade 2) & Ready Writing – (grades 3,4,5,6) A contest for students in grades 2, 3,4,5 and 6. We have spots for 3 students per grade. Contestants are given a choice between two prompts which defines the audience, and provides the purpose for writing. Students will be selected by their grade level coach and tryouts will be based on in class writing assignments! Art Appreciation (grades 4-6) Each grade level can have up to 5 students. This contest involves the study of paintings from the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. and paintings or pictures from selected Texas museums. As part of their study, students will demonstrate an understanding of art history and interpret ideas and moods in original artworks while making informed judgments about the artwork. Part A of the contest requires the contestants to identify and spell the names of 15 selected artists and titles of pictures randomly selected by the director from the list of 40 pictures. Part B consists of 30 questions about art history and art elements characteristic of the 40 art selections.
