Protein Synthesis A brief overview Purpose? Key Players?
Transcription -The main purpose of transcription is to create RNA from DNA because RNA leaves the nucleus to carry out its functions but DNA does not -A.

Protein Synthesis: Transcription, Translation, and Mutations

Think-Pair-Share: What can you identify/ remember about this topic?

What are we looking at? A cell

Where is all the genetic information stored for a cell? The nucleus

It sends the message through mRNA How does this DNA get the message out of the nucleus to other parts of the cell? It sends the message through mRNA

Where does mRNA take this message to be turned into a protein? Into the cytoplasm, to a ribosome (grey circle around the mRNA)

Which comes first alphabetically, translation or transcription? then TransLation Transcription happens first, in the nucleus, then TransLation occurs at the ribosome to make a protein

You will use this page to do your practice problems

DNA RNA A U T A C G G C Always look up your mRNA to find the amino acid. TAG CGA AUC GCU UAG CGA Iso. Ala.

Codon Bingo DNA RNA A U T A C G G C DNA mRNA tRNA A.A Always look up your mRNA to find the amino acid. 1st round: Call out DNA 2nd round: Call out mRNA 3rd round: Call out tRNA

Identify this Process On the back of your bingo card, write whether the process you see is Transcription, Translation, or all of Protein Synthesis. When I say so, show me your board. Have a reason for why you picked your answer. (ex: It had DNA, It had RNA, it occurred in the nucleus, It occurred outside the nuceleus, I saw tRNA, etc)

Mutations Card Sort Each group of students get a set of cards and each student gets a student handout and a codon chart. Students must sort the cards in to groups. Each group must have: 1) an image or mutation example card, 2) one or more mutation type cards, and 3) a description card . Note: There will be more than one type of mutation card in each group except non-disjunction. Students should use their student handout to label each example and take any needed notes.
