Long Road SFC Open Badges Issued through Moodle

Badges supplied by Nick Potamitis for Cambridge Technicals Media Step 1: Design your badge Badges supplied by Nick Potamitis for Cambridge Technicals Media

https://www.openbadges.me/designer.html

What skills does the badge represent? Step 2: Work out the badge criteria Who is the badge for? What skills does the badge represent? What behaviour does it encourage? What does the earner have to do? What evidence will show the criteria has been met? What opportunities does it unlock? Does it expire? Who supports and recognises your badge? Where does a user find out about your badge? Who awards your badge and how? What resources are needed for badges to work? What other badges exist in your eco system? Are there different levels?

Add the badge to your course page Step 3: Log on to Moodle and your course page Add the badge to your course page Manage the badge by setting up the following: Badge name Description Image Issuer details Badge expiry date (if relevant) Criteria and conditions to be met to earn it Message Then enable access Next step is after LRSFC and into the global environment …

Step 4: Students and staff register for a Mozilla backpack http://www.openbadges.org/

Step 5: Sort your badges into public and private collections and display the public collection on professional networks or social media

Things to avoid! Developing too many badges, which requires an assessment component for the badge earner, could create work overload and a situation where the meaning/value of badges could be diluted. What if one department creates a badge for presentational skills, for example, but two other departments also have a similar badge? Which one is considered the most valuable?

Challenges ahead Building credibility into badges and making sure they are recognised by employers and universities so that young people see the value in engaging with badges.

Working Group Meet 2 or 3 times a term Help to implement the badges initiative Oversee QA cross-college Encourage sharing of best practice possibly through database on T & L page Network with feeder schools, local employers, universities, voluntary organisations Promote to students – perhaps with 2 or 3 students in the group to give their perspective.
