Charles V Inherits 2 Thrones Hapsburg Empire Abdication Charles I inherited the Hapsburg Empire and Holy Roman Empire Took on the name Charles Vu Fought constant wars while ruling 2 empires Often fought Ottoman Empire Gave up throne Split lands between European nations

Phillip II Solidifies Power Centralizing Power Phillip II took over for Ferdinand Reigned for 42 years Very devout Ruled as an absolute monarch Believed that he had the divine right to rule

Phillip II Solidifies Power Battles in the Mediterranean and the Netherlands In 1571 at the Battle of Lepanto the Ottoman Empire was defeated Battle rebels in the Netherlands Protestants and Catholics were angry about high taxes Eventually the Netherlands declared independence
