ivote A system for polling students in the class Chapter 1: ivote in a nutshell Julien T. Groulx et Denis Cousineau

Overview

What is ivote? ivote is a tool to perform polls in class settings. It is an alternative to clickers, LectureTools, SurveyMonkey, Qualtrics and other systems Benefits of ivote it is free does not require registration, passwords, or other no cookie or IP adress is collected can be integrated into PowerPoint (see http://www.tqmp.org/ivote/iVoteWithPowerPoint.pptm) SPSS (see http://www.tqmp.org/ivote/iVoteWithSPSS.pptx) R etc.

How to use ivote

How does ivote work? 1- Create a question To create a question that the students will answer to  Go to http://www.tqmp.org/ivote You choose the language in which it will be shown (currently only english and french) a question format (e.g., True/False, 4-alternatives, Lickert scale, etc.) a question identifier an access code The system replies by displaying two links related to your question: one to be used by the voters (the students) one to access a complete dashboard (for the instructor) Tips: start your question identifier with your class name, e.g. psy2506 always use the same access code, one that you can remember (it is not possible to retrieve a forgotten access code)

How does ivote work? 1- Create a question www.tqmp.org/ivote

How does ivote work? 2- Get the students to vote Students can access the poll : on their smartphone using a QRcode reader  or from a computer using an URL  (images generated by ivote) Note that the web site only shows the response alternatives, not the question.

How does ivote work? 3(a)- See the results in PowerPoint You can add a button in PowerPoint the button, when clicked, will add a picture to the slide show on the current slide with the vote results (the plot takes about 4-8 seconds to show)

How does ivote work? 3(b)- See the results in SPSS You can upload the data into SPSS a short syntax is all that is needed Python for SPSS must be installed (the upload takes less than 1 second)

How does ivote work? 3(c)- See the results in R A read.table command upload the data from ivote (the upload is nearly instantaneous)

How does ivote works? 3(d)- See the results in a web browser Navigate to the following URL www.tqmp.org/ivote/{identifier}.php?AccessCode={accesscode} in which: {identifier} must be replaced with your question identifier {accesscode} must be replaced with your question access code. For example, if you created a question with identifier: psy2506q1 and access code: tt, the url is www. tqmp.org/ivote/psy2506q1.php?AccessCode=tt (this url is case-sensitive: Psy is not the same as psy). This link was given to you in Step 1; you can bookmark it.
