Presentation transcript:

The Columbian Exchange By Mrs. Moore

Columbus led three additional expeditions after his first trip to America. On the second trip Columbus started bringing settlers, animals and other supplies. His new goal was not only to find riches, but to set up settlements or colonies. A colony is a settlement that is far away from the county that it is ruled by.

The Columbian Exchange was a movement of people, animals, and ways of life from Europe to the New World.

There were many important things that the Europeans bought to the New World some of the most important things were horses, cattle, sheep, pigs and rice.

Many items were shipped back to Europe from the Americas Many items were shipped back to Europe from the Americas. The Europeans were introduced to corn, potatoes, tomatoes, cocoa and beans.

However, along with the good things, many of the new people also brought with them diseases that the Native Americans could not fight off and many of them died. The diseases that were introduced to the Americas were small pox, measles and malaria.

The Europeans used many of the Native Americans as slaves, however, when most were killed by diseases a new source of slavery was needed.
