Do you want to be well? Pastor Nathan Weller March 19, 2017 Series: Questions Jesus Asked

The questions Jesus asks can change your life

--John 5.1-6 (ISV) 1 Later on, there was another festival of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 2 Near the Sheep Gate in Jerusalem is a pool called Bethesda in Hebrew. It has five colonnades, 3 and under these a large number of sick people were lying—blind, lame, or paralyzed—waiting for the movement of the water. 4 At certain times an angel of the Lord would go... (cont’d) --John 5.1-6 (ISV)

5 One particular man was there who had been ill ...down into the pool and stir up the water, and whoever stepped in first after the stirring of the water was healed of whatever disease he had. 5 One particular man was there who had been ill for 38 years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?” --John 5.1-6 (ISV)

Do you want more from life?

If we consider the unblushing promises of reward and the staggering nature of the rewards promised in the Gospels, it would seem that Our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.

My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life. --John 10.10 (NLT)

My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life. --John 10.10 (NLT) Rejoice in the Lord always. I say it again: Rejoice! --Philippians 4.4 (NIV)

My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life. --John 10.10 (NLT) Rejoice in the Lord always. I say it again: Rejoice! --Philippians 4.4 (NIV) You will show me the way of life, granting me the joy of your presence and the pleasures of living with you forever. --Psalm 16.11 (NLT)

7 “Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.” --John 5.7 (NIV)

Do you want to be changed?

8 Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” 9 At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked. --John 5.8-9 (NIV)

9b The day on which this took place was a Sabbath, 10 and so the Jewish leaders said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat.” 11 But he replied, “The man who made me well said, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’ ” (cont’d) --John 5.9b-13 (NIV)

--John 5.9b-13 (NIV) 12 So they asked him, “Who is this fellow who told you to pick it up and walk?” 13 The man who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there. --John 5.9b-13 (NIV)

Are you ready to live with a purpose?

14 Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, “See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.” --John 5.14 (NIV)

The person who has my commandments and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I, too, will love him and reveal myself to him.” --John 5.21 (NIV)

How blessed is the person... 2 But he delights in the Lord’s instruction and meditates in his instruction day and night. --Psalm 1.1-2 (ISV)
