MICE Operations Scenario Run 1 Michael S. Zisman Deputy Spokesmouse Center for Beam Physics Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory MICO Meeting January 24, 2008

US Funding Status-Zisman Introduction (1) MICE Run 1 covers ISIS operating period from February 5 through March 13, 2008 We have made considerable progress in getting ready for beam power supply and magnet cabling well along DC cables done; need grounding to operate AC cables going in interlocks being cabled water connections completed on all upstream magnets downstream magnets not yet done August 1, 2007 US Funding Status-Zisman

US Funding Status-Zisman Introduction (2) Stages of program Pre-commissioning includes magnet testing and radiation survey ISIS running; no MICE target MICE target commissioning includes operation of upstream beam line monitor first measurements of yield vs. ISIS losses Beam line commissioning (manual or with slow controls?) includes operation of downstream beam line monitor Detector commissioning (CKOV,...) includes TOF0 and tracker if ready Decay solenoid (“DS”) commissioning if available Preparation of “6” mm beam evaluate yields August 1, 2007 US Funding Status-Zisman

US Funding Status-Zisman Pre-commissioning Under way now defining and checking magnet polarities MICE NOTE MAGN-198 prepared (Apollonio, Flower, Tilley, MZ) all magnet terminals marked (D1, D2, Q1-Q6) dipoles tested back to power supply quadrupoles tested only locally To do: test remaining magnet polarities at supply get remaining services added (water, grounding, klixons, AC) test all interlocks (thermal, water flow) at power supply initial radiation survey(s) August 1, 2007 US Funding Status-Zisman

US Funding Status-Zisman No target Necessary due to delayed delivery of second “validation” target system unlikely that we will have permission to operate target during run-up period Will ask for a bit of “semi-dedicated” time during ISIS production run no guarantee we’ll get this Can look at background rates on upstream detector Can run magnets to look at stability and thermal behavior August 1, 2007 US Funding Status-Zisman

US Funding Status-Zisman Target Awaiting target test procedure from Booth also shift schedule Can test position reproducibility reliability triggering on ISIS clock (50/64 Hz rate) losses in ISIS vs. dip depth crude production estimates Gather ammunition for discussion on loss rates August 1, 2007 US Funding Status-Zisman

US Funding Status-Zisman Beam Line Operate locally unless slow controls are available Start with dipoles only and positive polarity protons (start with these) or pions do not expect enough intensity for running negatives use beam line detectors (upstream and downstream of DS) can look at throughput (crudely) look at alignment Put on quads to see change in intensity use optics for no-DS configuration to be developed look at steering and beam size changes Do we test negative polarity? August 1, 2007 US Funding Status-Zisman

US Funding Status-Zisman Other detectors Look at CKOV will help distinguish protons from pions Look at TOF0 or tracker, if available Commission DAQ and get MLCR really operational August 1, 2007 US Funding Status-Zisman

Commission Decay Solenoid If we can get refrigerator and transfer line operational, will try to commission DS unlikely, but worth a try Would like to do warm polarity measurements if possible Repeat beam line measurements if we get this far these will represent “real” production estimates August 1, 2007 US Funding Status-Zisman

US Funding Status-Zisman Prepare 6 Beam Evaluate good muons verify beam properties August 1, 2007 US Funding Status-Zisman
