Presentation transcript:

Objectives This lecture is intended as a review and is conducted in a tutorial manner. We try address the following questions: What is semiconductor material? What is electrical conduction? Why silicon to build an IC? What is the atomic structure of silicon? What is intrinsic and extrinsic silicon? What are the majority and minority carriers? What is n material, p material ? What is Carrier mobility ? What is Field Effect? What are the processing steps ?

Objectives Review and define the following terminologies with respect to silicon: Tetravalent, Crystal structure, Valence, Covalent bonding. Bulk silicon, Intrinsic Silicon, Valence band, Forbidden band, Conduction band. Definition of holes, Intrinsic conduction, extrinsic conduction, donor atoms, n-type material, negative carrier, positive carrier, p-type material, majority carrier, minority carrier, acceptor atoms, dopant, doping. Carrier mobility, Field Effects, Accumulation layer, Depletion layer, Inversion layer
