They are all effects of climate change! Make the connection between these photos

Key idea: Climate Change is the result of natural and human factors, and has a range of effects. Evidence for climate change from the beginning of the Quaternary Period to the present day Possible causes of climate change - natural factors; orbital changes, volcanic activity & solar output - human factors; use of fossil fuels, agriculture & deforestation Overview of the effects of climate change on people and the environment.

Overview of the effects of climate change on people and the environment Up to 4: Give a basic description of one or two effects of climate change. 5/6: Give a description of a wider range of effects of climate change using named places and examples. 7+: Give a detailed description of a wide range of effects of climate change using specific named places and examples. Account for patterns of impact on a global scale.

Overview of the effects of climate change on people and the environment

What’s the Geography in this picture? How many different effects of climate change can you see? What are they?

Identify some impacts to areas of the world UK? Australia? India? China? Brazil? Greenland?

Sort your 12 effects of climate change into 2 piles of 6 – effects on the environment and effects on people

1. Warmer temperatures are causing glaciers to shrink and ice sheets to melt. The melting of ice on land, especially in Greenland and Antarctica, means that water stored on land returns to the oceans. This causes sea levels to rise. 2. Climate change is affecting farming. Some crops are suffering – maize crops are getting smaller due to warming. However, in other countries further north and south of the equator, they have found they are now able to grow crops they couldn’t before due to the warmer climate. 3. The distribution of species could change and biodiversity could decrease. Some species are being found further north and south of the equator, while other habitats are being damaged or destroyed. Species that are highly adapted to these habitats are becoming endangered or even extinct. 4. Shrinking sea ice leads to the loss of polar habitat. 5. Lower crop yields could increase malnutrition, ill health and death from starvation – especially in the equatorial and tropical regions. 6. Rising sea levels means that low-lying coastal areas, like the Maldives, will be flooded more regularly. This will increase coastal erosion and some coastal areas will be submerged, so coastal habitats will be lost.

7. Climate change is seeing more extreme weather 7. Climate change is seeing more extreme weather. This means more money is having to be spent on predicting extreme weather, reducing their impacts and rebuilding after they have caused damage and destruction. 8. Some areas are becoming so hot and dry that it is no longer possible to live there. At the same time floods in low-lying areas are becoming increasingly common. This is forcing migration and the areas where people are moving to are becoming overcrowded. 9. Coral reefs are suffering from bleaching due to increasing sea water temperatures. Bleaching is when coral turns white due to the loss of its algae. 10. Precipitation patterns are changing. Warmer temperatures are affecting how much rain areas are getting – some are getting more, others are getting less. 11. Changing rainfall patterns are creating water supply problems. This can lead to political tensions, especially where rivers and reservoirs are on the borders of countries. 12. In some places deaths from heat are becoming increasingly common. However, at the same time deaths from cold have decreased.

Let’s take a ride in the Climate Time Machine!

Climate change is thought to be responsible for the deaths of millions of people every year. But is everyone affected equally? How does climate change contribute to the death rate – why are people dying because of climate change?

The oceans absorb most of the greenhouse gases and this is the cause of our extreme weather

Which statement from your sorting activity would best fit each of these pictures?

Coral reefs are suffering from bleaching due to increasing sea water temperatures. Bleaching is when coral turns white due to the loss of its algae.

Climate change is affecting farming Climate change is affecting farming. Some crops are suffering – maize crops are getting smaller due to warming

Warmer temperatures are causing glaciers to shrink and ice sheets to melt. The melting of ice on land, especially in Greenland and Antarctica, means that water stored on land returns to the oceans. This causes sea levels to rise.
