Writing A Grant—From Start To Finish Workshop 2: Developing Your Grant Proposal Idea Educational Resource Development & LCC Foundation March 28, 2017

Developing Your Grant Proposal Idea Last week we discussed: What grants are and do Types of funders How to identify potential funders Project planning basics Identifying potential project partners Roles of Educational Resource Development and LCC Foundation Overview of LCC and LCC Foundation grant process Developing Your Grant Proposal Idea

Developing Your Grant Proposal Idea This week we’ll explore: The why’s and how’s of developing a grant project Developing the project idea Writing the case for support Doing effective group work Developing Your Grant Proposal Idea

Developing Your Grant Proposal Idea Successful grant proposals: Address a significant issue for both the applicant and the funder (defines the project’s goal) Show an innovative and well supported approach to addressing that issue Describe reasonable and measureable objectives, and a detailed work plan to achieve them Include a plan to evaluate the project’s success Include a clear and accurate budget Assure the funder that the applicant is capable of success Developing Your Grant Proposal Idea

Developing Your Grant Proposal Idea Cultivating Buy-In and Commitment Before you spend a lot of time developing a project idea, you need both buy-in and commitment from potential partners and from LCC Buy-in is accepting an idea and, possibly, agreeing with it Commitment is more emotionally impelled; both head and heart want to support or join something The difference between the two might make all the difference in your success. Developing Your Grant Proposal Idea

Developing Your Grant Proposal Idea Generating a project idea: Getting started Brainstorming Questioning Listing Researching Comparing Mapping Flow charting Freewriting Developing Your Grant Proposal Idea

Developing Your Grant Proposal Idea Generating a project idea: Mind Mapping Mind maps can be a very effective fist step in developing a project idea. Through individual or group brainstorming, maps can help you generate, visualize, structure, and classify ideas Developing Your Grant Proposal Idea

Developing Your Grant Proposal Idea Developing a project idea: Components Project need Who, what, why, how, where, when Relation to LCC mission, values, strategic plan, Operation 100%, Division/Department priorities Project delivery Evaluation—who Budget—what & why Budget narrative/justification Developing Your Grant Proposal Idea

Developing Your Grant Proposal Idea Innovate by Adapting A project idea can be generated from— and should be supported by: A tested idea adapted for your project A theoretical or research construct that needs testing Developing Your Grant Proposal Idea

Developing Your Grant Proposal Idea Developing a project idea: Partners Who needs to be involved? Internal partners External partners (inside and outside of LCC) Meet with key partners to shape the project idea and build buy-in and commitment Two approaches: Starting with an established project idea Starting with only a goal in mind Developing Your Grant Proposal Idea

Developing Your Grant Proposal Idea Developing a project idea: Documentation Gather information that supports project need: Quantitative (LCC data, outside data, reports, studies) Qualitative (student, employee, and community stories, questionnaires, surveys) These can also help develop your project evaluation plan Developing Your Grant Proposal Idea

Developing Your Grant Proposal Idea Developing a project idea: Organizational Information Relevant organizational information: History—College & Department/Division overview Specifics that apply to your project Previous and existing programs Staff and experience Outside connections or involvement Awards or other recognition Developing Your Grant Proposal Idea

Developing Your Grant Proposal Idea Group exercise: Share your ideas for a project that would provide a value-added service to students and to the college and/or Brainstorm a project idea to use in these workshops (You may want to have a facilitator, note taker, and time keeper for your group) Developing Your Grant Proposal Idea

Developing Your Grant Proposal Idea Why write a Case for Support? Writing a Case for Support is a strategic first step in developing a project idea that will clearly meet the defined needs of project participants and the organization. It will also provide baseline information for writing a grant proposal. Developing Your Grant Proposal Idea

Developing Your Grant Proposal Idea How might you use a Case for Support? A complete and current Case for Support can be quickly adapted to meet a specific grant funder or potential donor’s interests and requirements It can also be used for Departmental planning, in outreach materials, on your website, and by LCC marketing Your Case for Support should be reviewed and updated regularly Developing Your Grant Proposal Idea

Developing Your Grant Proposal Idea Developing a Case for Support For your project idea: What ideas/information do you already have? What do you need to collect? (Create a list) How will you collect it? If working in a small group or partnership, who will collect what information? If working on your own, how will you gather information? Create a timeline and set a date for completion Developing Your Grant Proposal Idea

Developing a Case for Support Helpful tip: Stay grounded in reality Developing Your Grant Proposal Idea
