Second Grade ABC Book of Wisdom Created by 2010 Second Graders from Crystal Elementary for other Second Graders

Aa is for accuracy Second graders should know what accuracy is. If you don’t, we will teach you. Accuracy is when you look at a book and you read the words correctly.

Bb is for beginning In second grade we always talk about the beginning. In the beginning you have to indent before you start writing. You can start with a question or a regular sentence. The beginning of the story should catch the reader’s mind.

Cc is for comprehension In second grade, you have to read. If you do not understand, you have to back up and really read. You need to be able to retell what you read. You also need to answer questions on your test. That is a second grade word.

Dd is for details. In second grade, we use details a lot. They go in our stories and everything. Details shows how the characters look or if they are a boy or girl. Details describe what is going on in a story. Details are what you see and hear.

Ee is for eyes and ears on the speaker. You need to keep your eyes and ears on the speaker. The best thing for you to do when the teacher is moving is have your eyes follow her. If you do, you will know what to do.

Ff is for friends In second grade you need friends. Friends will help you when you are stuck or confused. P.S. When you are by your best friend, try not to talk.

Gg is for good choices You have a decision to make a good choice or a bad choice. All the teachers appreciate good choices. Mrs. King likes good choices. It makes her day great.

Hh is for helpful. Helpful means do something to help like pick up messes, pencils and put away books. Be helpful to your teacher by showing not telling the answers to your learning partner.

Ii is for in all. You need to know that the words in all means to add or count them all up.

Jj is for join in. Mrs. King likes you to join in. If you do not join in you will never learn how to do it.

Kk is for keep your hands and feet to yourself. It is important to keep your hands and feet to yourself. It keeps us all safe. If you don’t you will get a write-up.

Ll is for learning. Learning is important in second grade. You will learn “houmongus” words that you did not know when you were a baby. You need to learn fractions and double digit math problems. You also need to learn about lots of writing. You learn a lot in second grade.

Mm is for math. When you are in second grade you have to do math. When you have a hard time, Mrs. King will help you at the jellybean table. You will learn addition and subtraction, fractions, graphs, money, and telling time. At the end of second grade you get to learn multiplication.

Nn is for names You always need to remember to put your name on your paper. It is really important because you could get your paper mixed up with someone else and their paper might be wrong. Plus Mrs. King sings this song to remind you… Name, name, put your name.

Oo is for organize If Mrs. King says to organize your tables that means to neatly stack folders, papers, books up like you are making a tower. Put the pencils in the pencil holder. But don’t play with the pencils.

Pp is for practice You need to practice your homework so you can get good at reading, spelling and reading your 100 words in 1 minute. You also need to practice writing neatly. You can help yourself by practicing.

Qq is for questions. Mrs. King likes it when you ask questions about your work. Ask questions about things you wonder about so that you can do research. The more questions that you ask the smarter you get. It is good to ask questions.

Rr is for raise your hand. In second grade, you have to raise your hand and not blurt. When you raise your hand, Mrs. King will call on you. It makes Mrs. King sad when kids blurt, so raise your hand because we want Mrs. King to feel happy the whole day.

Ss is for select a just right book. When you select just the right book, the book can not be too hard or too easy. The book has to be just right for you. Some people select chapter books. Some people don’t. But you should always select just the right book for you to read.

Tt is for teacher. Do you know what your teacher’s name is? Her name is Mrs. King. She teaches you new things each day. If you get stuck, she’ll be there for you. She will teach you math, books, writing, reading, money, and times. She is very nice.

Uu is for use kind words. In second grade you need to use kind words not bad words to your teachers and your friends. If you use kind words to everyone you can make friends.

Vv is for Voraciously read. You should always voraciously read when you finish your work. Voraciously read means read your head off and don’t just look at the pictures. Voraciously reading helps you do better on your reading tests. So remember to voraciously read all the time.

Ww is for Kathy-jo Wargin. Kathy-jo Wargin is one of our favorite authors because she leaves us in suspense. Two of the titles are Mitt the Michigan Mouse and Minn from Minnesota. We love to write our own Mitt and Minn chapter stories with suspense.

Xx is for eXpectations. Always follow the expectations or you will get into lots of trouble. You might even get a write-up. Every teacher likes it when we follow the expectations.

Yy is for don’t yell. Yelling gives people headaches. You will get in trouble if you yell out an answer. You will do better work if it is quiet so that everyone can concentrate, Mrs. King will give you a warning and then you will give you a write-up. P.S. We just gave you a warning.

Zz is for don’t zip through Don’t zip through your writing, tests reading, or work because you will makes mistakes and it will be messy. If you do zip through your work, Mrs. King will be disappointed. Do your personal best and don’t zip through everything.

Good Luck in Second Grade
