BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF RADIO DIALOGUE Bulawayo Urban Radio Sources Female: 40% Male: 60% Employees: 20 Females: 11 Males: 12 COE since March 2011 Photograph/graphics/ scans/map that will highlight some of the information in the description GENDER EQUALITY BY 2015, YES WE MUST!

RADIO DOCUMENTARY   This radio documentary seeks to find out from women ( who suffer mostly from domestic violence) why they do not report cases of violence against them or withdraw the charges soon after reporting. GENDER EQUALITY BY 2015, YES WE MUST!

HOW DOES YOUR SUBMISSION CONTRIBUTE TOWARDS ACHIEVING THE 28 TARGETS OF THE SADC GENDER PROTOCOL? PROTOCOL TARGET ACTIONS Article 6. Equal access to protection justice and elimination of domestic violence Community needs education on their powers as third parties to report Domestic Violence. (Many still believe domestic disputes are private matters not be interfered with.) Article 30 (2). Increase programmes for, by and about women on gender specific topics, that challenge gender stereotypes. Radio program calls for a relook at cultural beliefs which tolerate and fuel domestic violence. Article 29(2) Equal representation of women in ownership and decision making in media structures. 50% of women at Radio Dialogue hold top decision making positions e.g. Director, Finance, Advocacy, Community Safety, News Editor, Advocacy officer. GENDER EQUALITY BY 2015, YES WE MUST!

Background Program seeks to tackle fear. Women living in abusive homes or marriages fear for their livelihood and that of the children. Program enables women who participated to explore avenues of tackling the problem without turning violent in retaliation Program also highlights domestic violence as a strong recipe for the poor psychological development of victims including children.   GENDER EQUALITY BY 2015, YES WE MUST!

Objectives To highlight the need for women to be empowered economically and academically. to do away with the dependency syndrome which causes women to be susceptible to abuse. Photo GENDER EQUALITY BY 2015, YES WE MUST!

Targets Women and extended families. Photo   Women and extended families. Addressing cultural beliefs and stereotypes. Police and neighbours (to highlight their role in fighting gender violence). Ultimately gender equality and respect for women must be planted in the youth so they take it into adulthood. Photo GENDER EQUALITY BY 2015, YES WE MUST!

Process Program is based on how women nurture a violent environment by not reporting or withdrawing cases hence I focused on women themselves who are often victims. Participants highlight social, cultural beliefs that inhibit them from reporting domestic violence. Photo GENDER EQUALITY BY 2015, YES WE MUST!

Feedback   Youth department held a road show which was held on World AIDS Day. The theme of the roadshow was “Join the fight against Gender Based Violence and HIV” At this roadshow we distributed T-shirts with the theme printed on them. Scans, quotes GENDER EQUALITY BY 2015, YES WE MUST!

Follow up “Your road shows are attended by men who abuse their spouses. We hope they learn and change their ways” - MaTshabalala, Radio Dialogue Ward member. “ If neighbours do not act on Domestic Violence, the victim may be injured or die. The same neighbours will be responsible for this.” - Winston Nyamayaro, Counsellor at Family Impact, Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. Made a follow up radio feature program. Interviewed an expert from Family Impact on the impact his organisation made on women who are afraid to report abusive spouses. I also enquired on the structures set up such as that of neighbours readily available to assist victims of violence I also captured the response of participants who attended the Cowdray park road show.
