SSWG8b Describe the major climates of Canada and the United States and how they affect Canada and the United States.

Climates of North America

(Mild) Humid Subtropical Found in Southeast United States No dry season Deciduous forest Ample supply of rain and warm currents. Cotton/ tobacco grown here.

(Dry) Deserts Southern South western United States. Caused by “rain shadow”. Limited drinking water quantity. Death Valley found here.

(Mild) Mediterranean Central and Southern California. Mild, wet winters. Hot dry summer. Drought resistant vegetation.

(Continental) Humid North western and Central North United States. Cold winters and hot summers. Warm moist winds from Rockies Fertile soil and fair amount of rainfall (10 to 30 inches) Corn and Wheat Belt (Great Plains)

(Mild) Marine West Coast Pacific Coast to southern Alaska High precipitation. Winter overcast and rainy. Summers and cloudless and cool. Ferns, mosses and coniferous forests.

Sub-artic Large parts of Canada and Alaska. Low temperatures. Coniferous and mixed deciduous vegetation. Important region for timber.

Population Density Think-pair-share Which climate regions do most people live in. What factors might climate impact population distribution? How might physical features impact population distribution ? How might natural resources impact population distribution?

You do (Research) Research what are the highest grossing exports in Canada and United States (using CIA.gov) Research what goes into to making some of these exports. How do physical features impact this? How do climates impact this?
