Objectives of this workshop Understand what research is Understand why citation and referencing is important in research Learn how to create your works cited page and cite various sources of information correctly Learn how to use online tools to help with the citation process

What is Research? Primary Research: First hand investigation - interviews, surveys, lab reports, historical texts and art Secondary Research: What others say about your topic - journal articles, books PP will likely consist of a combination of these things Research - Passion and insight: you have spent time finding out about what others have to say about the topic you are interested in

Why cite? Requirement of the IB Part of the Assessment Criteria Prevents Plagiarism Shows your research process Acknowledges your hard work Its can be the most tedious part of your project if you don’t get organised from the start and understand why its important IB requires consistent approach to referencing, do not get hung up on 100% accuracy Criterion A - addressed here - must cite consistently to achieve high marks BBIS and IB have strong policies on academic honesty - plagiarism is serious and results in zero marks. Most cases of plagiarism are unintentional. But ignorance is not an excuse! If in doubt cite it! Collecting Online Resources Online Social Bookmarking Photos/images Websites Screencapture As you research you collect resources this becomes your working Bibliography. You will collect a number of different types of resources: Diigo allows you to collect online resources such as images, videos and websites. Some of you may be using Managebac for uploading resources

TAGS the great thing about diigo is that you can TAG info/give it a label to organise it Create a list called personal project LISTS

highlight comment look up You can also highlight and make comments over any web page. These can be set to private. It becomes a working digital scrapbook Avoid plagiarism by having three distinct categories in your notes: your ideas your summary of the others ideas exact wording/quotes from information sources - use highlight function Could use comments to summarize info or write your own reflections (make sure you distinguish between the two)

Print Material - Books, Magazines Use your process journal to collect data. Record: Author, Title, Publishing details (Place & Date), Page Numbers Create a doc to collect your references Go old school - Use source cards You will be collecting print material as you complete your project. This can be stored in your process journal. If you are using your journal to keep track of research then make sure you are collecting all of the right information

How do I cite? You need to know the conventions or the rules of citation for the style you are using We use MLA - there is a style guide; its huge; you are not going to remember it and no one expects you to. So you options are to collect all the info you need and look up how to cite as you write up your project. E.g. when you come to site a website, look it up on OWL purdue or use an online citation generator Going to go over a few examples

MLA In-text Citation : Quotes These are found in the body of your Personal Project and look something like this: Wordsworth stated that Romantic poetry was marked by a “spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings” (263). Romantic poetry is characterized by the “spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings” (Wordsworth 263). Wordsworth extensively explored the role of emotion in the creative process (263). What information is displayed in the in-text citations? Note full stop/period after brackets. Author’s name, page number in brackets Why is the author’s name not in brackets in the first example? Same structure for quotes from other print, interviews (who would the author be?), websites (sometime no page number!) You use a shortened version of the title of the resource in the brackets These are the basic rules for print! Websites, interviews etc will not have page numbers so have different rules. Best think to do is check the OWL website

MLA In-text Citation : Paraphrase A Paraphrase is… Your own written version of the information and ideas of others. Putting information in your own words. Recognition still needs to be given to the original source Paraphrasing helps with the flow of your writing so that it is not full of quotes.
