“One must advocate for the best interests of children and women no matter how difficult and insensitive the political leadership is.” -Carol Bellamy “When the State is the terrorist, all citizens can be subject of repression or their rights as a citizen can be violated.” -Rene Leal Noun--a country, government, or the form of government in which absolute power is exercised by a dictator dictatorship By Lachlan Francis

Carol bellamy Served as Director of Peace Corps. 1993-1995 Executive director of UNICEF for 10 years Chair of Board of Directors FLA (Fair Labor Association) “In a global economy worth over $30 trillion, it is clear that the necessary resources and know-how to reach every child are well within our grasp”

Rene leal Arrested for demonstrating against Chilean dictatorship at age 17 Leader of the Chilean Left Youth movement from 1981 until the end of Chilean dictatorship (1990) “There is a sensation of powerlessness against a enormous criminal power. But this provide, at the end, like this was the case in Chile and in my own experience, that this repression triggered our will and decision of overthrowing the dictatorship, fighting by all means, even the violent ones when that was required in order to have the right of a legitimate defense against state terrorism.”

What is a dictatorship? Autocratic form of government ruled by single individual with unlimited power  An authoritarian regime in which civil rights and freedom are restricted to the extreme of a society under permanent, surveillance and state terrorism.

How does a dictatorship effect its people? Lack of human rights; often little reduction in poverty  Permanent fear, insecurity, lack of trust on others, for example, on your own class mates

What rights are most commonly suppressed in dictatorships? Freedom of expression The right of elections and political freedom, of meetings and civil associations, and the right of civil defense under the military law

Are there dictatorships that have worked well for the people of its country? “This is not possible in so far as democracy and freedom are not allowed by the order and command of a minority in power”

What is the most atrocious, current or past, dictatorship? Hitler  and Nazi Germany. Pinochet's dictatorship- 3 thousand people disappeared by the action of the political police and intelligence services, clandestine organizations led directly by Pinochet; more than 200,000 were arrested and tortured, among them, children, and elderly people. In some cases, entire families were killed. More than a million were sent to exile, Priests, teachers, academics, women workers, nuns, workers, peasants, Mapuche indigenous people, gay people were murdered. All were under suspicion, it was a terrifying regime of life.

Minorities; women and children Who are usually the people most abused by the powers of a dictatorship? Minorities; women and children  Organized Workers, trade unions, women organizations, student movements, democratic and Leftist political organizations.

How can a dictatorship affect a country’s international relations? Reduced or no development cooperation; lack of economic growth opportunities   It affects a lot, the regime is permanent condemned by the international community and its economy is affected by interruption of trade with dictatorships from democratic regimes

does the U.S. constitution protect against a dictatorship? One person one vote at least for the House of Representatives; Freedom of speech; free public education for all  By guaranteeing civil rights, democracy and human rights.

Conclusions In my interviews, I learned a lot about the atrocities of dictatorships. I also learned a lot about how the United States Constitution protects from a dictatorship. We must continue to protect our rights. If we don’t, we fall risk to becoming a dictatorship. We must not tolerate suppressed rights in our country, or others.
