You Are Dead! The Church At Sardis (Rev. 3:1-6) May have been shocked – To learn they were dead! You Are Dead! Yet – they had many desirable qualities

Rev 3:1-6 1 "And to the angel of the church in Sardis write, 'These things says He who has the seven Spirits of God and the seven stars: "I know your works, that you have a name that you are alive, but you are dead. 2 Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die, for I have not found your works perfect before God. 3 Remember therefore how you have received and heard; hold fast and repent. Therefore if you will not watch, I will come upon you as a thief, and you will not know what hour I will come upon you.

Rev 3:1-6 4 You have a few names even in Sardis who have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with Me in white, for they are worthy. 5 He who overcomes shall be clothed in white garments, and I will not blot out his name from the Book of Life; but I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels. 6 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches."

A Dead Church Good Qualities That Did Not Prevent Death I. Preventing Death / Reviving Life II.

Preventing Death / Reviving Life II. A. Watchful (vv. 2-3) 1. Lost their ground by carelessness – time to wake up! 2. Take a look at where you are & where it will lead. 3. “Whenever we are off our watch, we lose ground, and therefore must return to our watchfulness against sin, and Satan, and whatever is destructive to the life and power of godliness.” (Matthew Henry) 4. Be on guard – be alert to the dangers! 5. Look back & see how we’ve changed!

Preventing Death / Reviving Life II. A. Watchful (vv. 2-3) B. Strengthen Things That Remain (v. 2) 1. Use & exercise the strength you have! 2. May refer to person – Warn & strengthen them lest they become like the rest 3. More likely refers to deeds – love, faith, service you have – strengthen lest it die too 4. Had started – had not continued “In the lowest state of religion in a church there may be a few, perhaps quite obscure and of humble rank, who are mourning over the desolations of Zion, and who are sighing for better times.” (Albert Barnes)
