About Mrs. Glenn Allen

Everything we talk about tonight will be on my blog: https://blogs.waukeeschools.org/nglennallen

The Leader in Me Brookview Elementary is the first school in Iowa to be named a Lighthouse School! That means we provide opportunities for students to develop to their fullest potential in the areas of: leadership, responsibility, accountability, problem solving, adaptability, communication, initiative and self-direction, creativity, cross cultural skills, and teamwork. It’s not a program. We infuse it with everything we do (curriculum, rules, etc.) Primary Focus is on goal setting and intrinsic motivation We want it to carry over to outside of school

First Grade Curriculum 1st grade progress report standards- where the kiddos need to be at the END of the year We use the workshop approach for all subjects- which allows for differentiation 1. mini-lesson (10-15 min.)-whole group/focused lesson 2. application time (30-60 min.)-kids work independently, in partners and in small groups. Teacher works with small groups and individual students 3. closing-(5-10 min.) –whole class sharing, revisit a skill and students share their thinking

Literacy Reading Writing Spelling ~Groups based on need ~Focus areas: accuracy, fluency, comprehension, vocabulary ~Core Words ~Focus is on ideas ~narratives, opinions, informational pieces ~Introduce Revising and Editing ~Core Words ~Words Their Way ~ Work at their developmental stage ~Rules and patterns ~Core Words

Book Baggies ~I will send home book baggies with your child once we start reading groups. These books will be on or near your child’s reading level. You can return the books for new ones at your family’s convenience.

Math ~Focus on process of thinking about numbers/not just a product ~We use rubrics for every goal, so the kids will know where they are and what they need to do next ~Play lots of games to practice skills ~Big areas: problem solving, place value, money, time and math facts (10)

Social Studies and Science ~Encourages deeper understanding and problem solving skills ~Very highly motivating, will be teaching through inquiry, and infusing through reading and writing ~Science and Social Studies alternate

ABC’s of First Grade

Leadership Notebooks Focus on student goal setting and student reflection Helps facilitate a conversation between you and your child We will send them home about every other month or so

Bringing Out the Leader in Everyone Your story Matters! Brookview’s Mission is Bringing Out the Leader in Everyone We are going to spend some time this year learning how each one of us is unique, our strengths and interests, how we are leaders, OUR STORY. Please see the sheet of cardstock on your child’s desk with directions.
