Presentation transcript:

Precipitation Activities in GEO George J. Huffman, Precipitation Component Lead (?) (seconded from CGMS/IPWG) 1. Overall Activity Goal: The primary focus for precipitation wason providing data sets and associated information for use in other areas of GEO. This has come to include a focus on ensuring the long-term availability of satellite and gauge observations. Northeastern U.S. snow storm GPM DPR and GMI retrievals

Actions in 2016-2017 GPM released Version 04 IMERG in March 2017 GPM released Version 05 datasets for Level 1 and 2 products in May 2017 Joint meeting of • International Precipitation Working Group (IPWG) 8 • International Workshop on Space-based Snow Measurements (IWSSM) 5 • 3-7 October 2016, ISAC-CNR, Bologna, Italy • http://www.isac.cnr.it/~ipwg/meetings/bologna-2016/Bologna2016.html • included 3-day training course for ~30 hydromet students • http://ipwg.isac.cnr.it/meetings/bologna-2016/ Bologna2016_Training_Lectures.html

Planning for IPWG-9/IWSSM-6 Selected New Actions Action for all CGMS Members – Ensure the continuity of the current constellation of passive microwave sensors (for high quality satellite precipitation products for weather, climate and hydrological applications) through proper coordination of satellites, sensors and equatorial crossing times. Action for all CGMS Members – Ensure the continuity of existing in situ precipitation observation networks, promote access to those that are currently inaccessible but in operation, and explore new sources of in situ observations. Action to all CGMS Members – Timely (< 1 hr) and free access to all geostationary visible, IR and water vapor data is required to improve global hydrological prediction. To WMO - Recognizing that IPWG has considerable expertise in precipitation science and applications, IPWG requests the WMO (likely via VLAB) to establish a yearly training event on precipitation data sets and applications, for which IPWG will provide disciplinary expertise. Planning for IPWG-9/IWSSM-6 Tentatively slated for N. America (Canada?) in Fall 2018. Plan to sponsor a training session for Hydromet staff and students.

Plans for 2017-2018 Version 05 IMERG products will be released in July 2017 Version 05 GPM Level 1 and 2 products for the TRMM era (back to 1998) will be released in November 2017 Version 05 IMERG products for the TRMM era (back to 1998, or at least 2000) will be released in winter 2017-18
