W e l c o m e s to its technology you Ladies and gentlemen, A Division of ACD Technologies SpA W e l c o m e s Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to this symposium. I and other Italian engineers are happy to have this opportunity to introduce our P. C. B. technology. I hope you will find this seminar interesting.(+) Now welcome to cedal technology. you to its technology

Laminating press for multilayers and base materials Cedal Division Laminating press for multilayers and base materials (+) Now I would like to introduce you cedal’s laminating press for multilayers and base materials called “Adara System”

ADARA a ”press concept” The latest frontier in the multilayer and base material lamination (+) “Adara “ technology. The latest frontier in the multilayers and base material lamination Cedal Division

“ADARA” press concept (+) This is the “Adara” functioning scheme. The alternate current is transformed into direct current that goes to the press. The data, such as temperature pressure and vacuum, from the press goes to the p.c.. The p.c. controls all these data and drive the electrical power and input of the factors, like compressed air and vacuum pump. Cedal Division

STACK PREPARATION The two copper foils grant the electrical continuity from the bottom to the top of the stack Now I’ll give you some information about stack preparation. (+) The copper foil must be continued from bottom to the top of the stack. Cedal Division

“anodised aluminium press plates” STACK PREPARATION Insertion among material levels of: “anodised aluminium press plates” (+) Between one level of material and the next one there are the anodized aluminium press plates. Cedal Division

Press plate specs The surface anodization is required in order to insulate the different levels of material and to harden the surface (+) Since our Adara press uses the electrical current, we need a special press plate. The surface anodization is required to insulate the different levels of material and to harden the surface. The thickness is 1,2 mm. Thickness:1,2mm(47mils) Cedal Division

STACK PREPARATION For MTL pressing: the core and prepreg sandwiches are positioned between the copper foils. Max height of the stack: up to 260 mm (10.2”) (+) As you see from the schematic drawing here, the sandwiches are between the copper foils. The height of the stack is minimum 140 mm. and maximum 260 mm. Yellow colour is material like FR4 and brown colour is copper of innerlayers. Cedal Division

STACK PREPARATION prepreg prepreg prepreg For base material pressing: the prepreg foils are positioned between the copper foils. Very thin laminates are easily prepared! prepreg prepreg (+) As you see from the schematic drawing here, the sandwiches are between the copper foils. The height of the stack is minimum 140 mm. and maximum 260 mm. Yellow colour is material like FR4 and brown colour is copper of innerlayers. prepreg Cedal Division

“ADARA” PRESS CONCEPT (+) “Adara” press functioning. Heating: the heat is developed, by the “Joule effect”, from the current that goes through the copper foil. Cedal Division

“ADARA” PRESS CONCEPT Heating: heat is developed following the “JOULE LAW” by the current flowing through the two copper foils. (+) “Adara” press functioning. Heating: the heat is developed, by the “Joule effect”, from the current that goes through the copper foil. Cedal Division

DIFFERENCE OF HEATING (+) Difference of heating. “CONVENTIONAL PRESS” “ADARA PRESS” (+) Difference of heating. In the conventional press the heat goes from top and bottom to the center. In the Adara press instead, the heat is developed on each level because the copper foil works as heater. Cedal Division

“ADARA” PRESS CONCEPTS Temperature profile : temperature is controlled directly in the stack by thermocouple sensors. (+) “Adara” press functioning. The temperature is controlled directly in the stack by thermocouple sensors. Cedal Division

DIFFERENCE in the CONTROL CONVENTIONAL “ADARA” (+) The conventional press has the sensors in the hot platens. The Adara has the sensors in the stack. Cedal Division

“ADARA” PRESS CONCEPTS Pressure : the force is applied by an “AIR BAG” (+) “Adara” press functioning. Pressure : the first press with air bag. The piston is pushed down by an air bag filled with compressed air. The pressure piston is pushed by an airbag to grant pressure uniformity in the working area Cedal Division

DIFFERENCE OF PRESSING METHOD “CONVENTIONAL” “ADARA” (+) For the conventional press the pressure is applied with hydraulic piston pushed by oil and it requires a lot of maintenance. Adara needs only to connect the air pipe and a solenoid valve controls the pressure by p.c.. Clean and no maintenance. Cedal Division

TEMPERATURE DISTRIBUTION ON CONVENTIONAL PRESS t 2 - t 1 = about 30°C (+) Temperature distribution on conventional press. The red line shows the top and bottom panels temperature and the blue one is that of the middle panel. The temperature gap is very big. Cedal Division

Temperature distribution in “ADARA” press (+) Temperature distribution on Adara press. As you can see the temperature is very uniform, there is no gap among top middle and bottom even if the stack is very bigger than that of the conventional. Cedal Division

Temperature distribution on “ADARA” press (+) This shows an example of temperatures measured in the corners and the center of top, middle and bottom panels. The blue numbers are the temperatures at 140°C and the red ones are at 175°C, the gaps are very small and at maximum they are plus or minus 3°C. in all the stack. Cedal Division

VACUUM: vacuum is applied prior hot cycle start-up TEMPERATURE: up to max 320° C ( 620° F) real and measured in the center of the stack Teflon base material is OK High TG (glass transition) material is OK with the standard press. VACUUM: vacuum is applied prior hot cycle start-up Cedal Division

Stack in front of the “one ADARA’s opening” (+) “Adara is mouth opened and it is eating the stack. Cedal Division

“ADARA” AT WORK (+) “Adara” is at work. Cedal Division

INSTALLATION OF ADARA. HALF DAY in a clean and fresh environment INSTALLATION OF ADARA? HALF DAY in a clean and fresh environment! NO PIPES for OIL NO TANKS for OIL NO high pressure devices out of the press (+) The quality of “Adara” production. Cedal Division

The quality of “ADARA” PRODUCTION Cedal Division

(+) The quality of “Adara” production. 1: less material movement during lamination because there’s no need of pressure to heat the stack: the heat is transferred by the 2 copper foils. 2: temperature uniformity in the whole stack (top - medium – bottom part) means better control of the resin fusing point 3: less pressure means less resin overflow during melting phase (+) The quality of “Adara” production. Cedal Division

(+) The quality of “Adara” production. Thanks to the temperature uniformity in the stack and to the lower pressure required for pressing, ADARA provides the following quality advantages: a: less resin overflow which means thickness uniformity of the final PCB (less than 5%) b: less resin overflow means easy to do impedance controlled PCBs (+) The quality of “Adara” production. New bonding Technology by Cedal based to the Induction of a Magnetic Flow why is better? 1:bonded area of 25x12 mm: 4 times greater with uniform vertical and horizontal heating 2: no need of pressure to heat the core sandwiches : thus avoiding dents marking the press plates “ the solution” to the bonding of 12 to 24 layers PCB, today critical with the traditional bonding

New bonding Technology by Cedal Why it reduces the operative cost? 1: the energy is used during the heating only therefore less 70% of operative cost (power) 2: the heating is very efficient: thus allowing the raise of temperature twice faster. therefore the bonding time is 50%: 20 sec total bonding uses a Chemplate trade mark

Available models RBM 66s: 3+3 bonding points single machine RBM 68d: 3+3 bonding point double machine RBM IMF: 2 + 2 bonding point single machine, by the induction flow technology (+) Here are its characteristics: This equipment is used to build up the stack and the copper foil is in roll form The copper foil is laid down from reels on the press plate and the material.
