Moving from what do we have to do to what Can we do Building a partnership with your University Attorney AHEAD 2016

Session Overview Introductions Seated in campus groups Building a proactive partnership Framing campus access and the benefits of Universal Design How to get attorney buy-in Activity – hypothetical scenario Questions and Answers

How to build a proactive partnership with your attorney Meet for lunch Invite to disability events Arrange office hours on site Discuss social model and universal design Present yourself as an expert, campus leader

Issue-raising vs. permission-seeking

Framing Campus Access to Move Beyond Compliance Present ADA as minimum standard or baseline Accessible ≠ Equitable Where do we locate the problem?

How can we make the experience of disabled students similar if not identical to that of Non-disabled Students?

Benefits of a Universal Design Approach Good design benefits everyone! Barrier-free design promotes a welcoming and inclusive campus. Proactive vs. reactive Sustainable vs. consumable Considering access initially can save money in retrofits and modifications.

A UD approach truly operationalizes campus values of equity and inclusion

How to Get Attorney Buy-In Track trends, synthesize impact and suggest a systemic approach Communicate financial implications More consistent with other campus compliance efforts (Title IX, etc.) Often lack of guidance or case law, UD/holistic approach can offer solid solution UD can simplify, especially for overworked attorney Proactive approach can protect institutions, manage vulnerabilities

Proactive approach can not only save money but protect institution

Scenario - Pitch it! The DS Office has been inundated with requests for captioning for classes as well as University websites, available to the public. You currently caption media only when a request has been made, and worry that given how quickly and frequently people utilize and create media, you are not responding effectively. Given the influx in requests for captioning from students, parents, administrators and the public, you want to engage your University attorney on developing an institutional response. How would you present a plan informed by UD and win over your attorney?
