MOTIVATION

DEFINATION OF MOTIVATION : MOTIVATION IS DERIVED FROM A LATIN WORD ‘MOVERE’ WHICH MEANS ‘TO MOVE’ , ‘TO ENERGIZE’ OR ‘TO ACTIVATE’. MOTIVATION IS THE PROCESS OF INITIATING AND DIRECTING BEHAVIOUR –VICTOR H. BENEFITS OF MOTIVATION It satisfies the needs of an individual as well as of a group. Motivation promotes jobs satisfaction. Performance = ability * motivation Proper motivation increases production. Motivation helps to promote learning process. It promotes self discipline and raises it to a positive level.

MOTIVES Motive is defined as an inner state that energizes, activates and directs behavior of individual towards a certain goal. Strong motives or needs make the individual restless and puts him in a state of disequilibrium until his needs are fulfilled or satisfied. Example : The intense desire to achieve name and fame may be the motive for a cricketer which makes him practice hard.

Types of Motives Usually, motives are classified into three major categories. These categories are: Primary Motives Secondary Motives General Motives

Primary Motives Hunger Thirst Clothing Sleep Avoidance of pain

Secondary Motives The secondary motives are the ones that are learned and then applied to satisfy personal needs and wants.  Power Motive : The power motive is usually for those individuals who do not like to follow someone else’s rules. The motivation of power is about having control over other people, rather than being DIRECTED by someone else. Achievement Motive: There are certain people who just like to work harder and achieve better things. We often call them as workaholics (yeah, nerds, too). These employees are always up for a challenge.  Security Motive: Some people are, by nature, more cautious and defensive. It is one of the reasons that so many companies offer health insurances, pensions,  medical facilities and job security. Status or Prestige Motive: some people need to be counted in the elite class and want to buy material items that enhance their prestige.

General Motives Motives which can not be termed primary or secondary Primary needs try to reduce the tension or stimulation whereas the general need induces the individual to enhance the amount of stimulation. Also called stimulus motives-Love ,concern and affection.

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Theory Works on the assumption that the behaviour of individuals at a particular moment is usually determined by their strongest need. Based on hypothesis that within every human being there exists a hierarchy of five needs.
