Introduction to Unit 5: Public Policy

Answer in a complete sentence Success Criteria 2/21/2017 1.We can identify the meaning of Public Policy. 2.We can compare and contrast foreign and domestic policy. 3.We can analyze the curriculum for Unit 5 to understand what we will be learning in the upcoming unit. 4.We can evaluate our prior knowledge of Public Policy by completing the Unit 5 Pre-Test. Answer in a complete sentence How do you think politicians decide what laws they want to pass? Do they want to help the most people, or what will get them re-elected? What did you do over the three day weekend?

Unit 5: Public Policy Public Policy - the way the gov’t addresses social concerns through legislation Or, the methods the gov’t uses to fix problems in our country

Two major kinds of Public Policy: Domestic & Foreign Domestic Policy - includes any laws that are passed to address issues inside the United States

Two major kinds of Public Policy: Domestic & Foreign Foreign Policy - any action taken to address issues around the world that effect that United States

Examples Domestic Foreign Environment Entitlements Health care & public health Crime Equality • National security • Economic interests • Humanitarian aid

Major Questions in Unit 5 What sort of things can the government do to fix the problems in America? What is America’s role around the world? How should the gov’t balance how much they spend to help people versus how much they take in taxes? Should the government be able to tell us what to do if they think it is best for us?

Homework: Unit 5 Vocabulary Using a textbook, or Google if you are at home, complete the matching activity for Unit 5 On the back, write the definition of each word provided IN YOUR OWN WORDS This is due Friday!!
