Presentation transcript:

Draw a Box and Whisker Plot Read and interpret a Box and Whisker Plot 0-13 Box and Whisker Plots Goals: Draw a Box and Whisker Plot Read and interpret a Box and Whisker Plot Eligible Content: A1.2.3.1.1 / A1.2.3.2.2

Vocabulary Second Quartile – the median of the data First Quartile – the median of the first half of the data Third Quartile – the median of the second half of the data Interquartile Range – the difference between the third quartile and the first quartile.

Vocabulary Minimum – smallest number in the data Maximum – largest number in the data

Think about a rectangular cake The places where you cut are called the Quartiles!

Finding the Quartiles Put numbers in order from smallest to largest. Find the median. Find the median of the numbers smaller than the median. Find the median of the numbers bigger than the median. Let’s find the quartiles of this class as an example!

Examples Find the first, second and third quartiles. 11, 19, 5, 34, 9, 25, 28, 16, 17, 11, 12, 7 10, 14, 22 39, 32, 27, 42, 21, 35, 38 27, 35, 39

Vocabulary Box and Whisker Plot – a data display that divides a set of data into four equal parts. 1st Quartile Median (2nd Quartile) 3rd Quartile Maximum Minimum

Examples 25, 50, 42, 29, 50, 33, 27, 35, 32, 40, 35, 28, 40, 40, 35, 35, 40, 25, 50, 35, 50, 40 32, 35, 40 52, 67, 85, 68, 89, 99, 92, 80, 89, 59, 79, 79, 90, 75, 78, 63, 94, 79, 64 67, 79, 89

Remember: data is divided into 4 equal parts

Reading a Box and Whisker Plot Use the Box and Whisker Plot on the front screen to answer the following questions: What is the median? What is the 1st quartile? What is the 3rd quartile? What is the minimum? What is the maximum? What percent of the data falls in the ___ to ___ range?

Practice Page P46 #8 Draw 2 Box and Whisker Plots!!

Take a Look at the Calculator The calculator can find mean, median, quartiles and even draw a box and whisker plot! Everything is under the STAT menu.
