King/Halling Algebra 2011-2012 Sets of Real Numbers King/Halling Algebra 2011-2012

AIM What are the subsets of real numbers and how are they alike/different from one another?

DO NOW Take out your homework so that we can check it off Write tonight’s homework in your planner We would like volunteers to put up Questions 2,4, and 7 on the homework board Write an example of the distributive property in your notebook

Introduction Hand out the subsets of Real Numbers Worksheet All of the following subsets will be defined by you during this class period Natural Numbers (Counting Numbers) Whole Numbers Integers Rational Numbers Irrational Numbers

Activity For the next ten minutes, you will work in a group to define the subset of real numbers assigned to you The best place to find a definition/explanation of your assigned subset is in the textbook Important Pages: Glossary, pg.17-18 Use your worksheet to record the following: Definition, Examples, and Key Facts

Sharing is Caring! We will now go around group to group to share our definitions with one another As other groups are sharing, be sure that you are writing their subset’s definition in your worksheet Be as clear and concise as possible when presenting

Comparing the Subsets

Evaluating Numbers We will now hand out a practice worksheet that has 6 Practice Problems Turn and work with a partner on the Practice Problems for the next 5 minutes If you have any questions, ask us!! Review the Practice Problems

Exit Ticket Write 3-4 sentences describing the difference between the different subsets of Real Numbers. You may also use the Irrational Numbers in your explanation. Be specific and use complete sentences!

Homework Homework #3: Page 20#1-10
