1-2 How Scientists Work Describe and explain the following picture

Designing an Experiment Redi’s Experiment In a controlled experiment, only one variable is tested at a time. Redi designed an experiment to determine what caused the sudden appearance of maggots. In his experiment, the manipulated variable was the presence or absence of the gauze covering. The results of this experiment helped disprove the hypothesis of spontaneous generation.

How did gas get in my Balloon How did gas get in my Balloon? Hypothesis: The enzyme aminotransferase causes chemical reactions using hydrogen peroxide to go faster. Procedure: This lab begins by getting the enzyme aminotransferase from the liver and placing it into three test tubes. The first test tube we added liver, then placed hydrogen peroxide into a balloon. The balloon was placed on the test tube and the hydrogen peroxide was poured into the test tube. We measured how wide the balloon expanded. In the 4th test tube we added hydrogen peroxide and placed a balloon over the test tube, this was the control. Results: It was found that test tube #1 rose 2.5 mm and expanded 1mm. Test tube #2 rose Conclusion: The enzyme aminotransferase caused a chemical reactions using hydrogen peroxide that went faster than the other chemical reactions. When the acid, vinegar was added to the enzyme the chemical reaction went slower, the balloon did not get as big. In the fourth test tube, the control, the balloon did not change size. After completing the experiment we________ the hypotheis.

1-2 How Scientists Work  Designing an Experiment A crime was committed here. Write down 10 possible clues you see that stand out

1-3 Characteristics of Living Things A. Living things share the following characteristics: made up of units called cells reproduce based on a universal genetic code grow and develop obtain and use materials and energy respond to their environment maintain a stable internal environment change over time

1-3 Characteristics of Living Things B. Living things maintain a stable internal environment. This process is called homeostasis. Although conditions outside an organism may change, conditions inside an organism tend to remain constant.

1-3 Characteristics of Living Things C. Big Biosphere All forms of life on Earth are connected together into a biosphere, which literally means “living planet.” The relationship between organisms and their environment depends on both the flow of energy and the cycling of matter.

Listed from Largest to Smallest C-1. Big Ideas in Biology BIOSPHERE ECOSYSTEM COMMUNITY POPULATION ORGANISM TISSUE CELLS ATOMS Because every child pees on the couch alot

AP Carbon has 6 protons. What is the atomic number for carbon? What is the atomic mass for carbon? Atomic number is the number of protons. 6 The number of protons and neutrons. 12

Branches of Biology E. Branches of Biology There a many branches of biology. For example: Zoologists study animals. Botanists study plants. Paleontologists study ancient life. Entomologist study insects

1-4 Tools and Procedures F. The metric system is a decimal system of measurement whose units are based on multiples of 10. Because the metric system is based on multiples of 10, it is easy to use.

1-4 Tools and Procedures G. Laboratory Techniques Cell Cultures The cell is able to reproduce so that a group of cells, called a cell culture, develops from the single original cell. H. Cell Fractionation Biologists often use a technique known as cell fractionation to separate the different cell parts. Cells are broken into pieces in a special blender called a centrifuge

2. A device that separates cell parts is a centrifuge. cell culture. light microscope. electron microscope.
