The Role of Design Practice in IP Development Nur YILDIRIM, MSc DESIGNNOBIS The Role of Design Practice in IP Development

Outline Design practice in Turkey: a brief overview of the sector through selection of works Mikrobiyosis Project Process: our contribution as design partner

Design Practice in Turkey Industry consists of tech startups, SMEs and large manufacturers and brands Companies usually acquire external support for design and R&D services

Design Practice in Turkey Characteristics of designed products are shaped by needs, which is usually determined by manufacturing volume and budget Main concern is the cost of the end product as the price should be competitive for local and global markets

Design Practice in Turkey Beta version in product design as a transition process from low volume manufacturing to mass production Companies are aiming for the end-user market for increased profits, along with producing OEM for other brands

tagCTC Analysis Device and Cartridge Automatization of a process in lab to come up with an analysis device and disposable cartridge Supported the product development from component selection and device configuration to research and sourcing of micro-fabrication technologies partners

tagCTC Analysis Device and Cartridge Design in technology development is usually about how it works, how it is produced at scales low or high Usability, human psychology, visual qualities and overall experience are expertise provided by designers

tagCTC Analysis Device and Cartridge Defined opportunity areas that led to unique selling points Beta version product for clinical tests before the final design

Main Takeaways Design is becoming a part of the front end project development and decision making processes. Design processes are becoming more holistic for pushing innovation in product, service and business domains. Companies are consulting designers on the possible applications of their products in different markets and industries.

Main Takeaways Defining the problem space is essential in order to solve them, embrace interdisciplinary approaches to cover expectations of each party (industry, partners, collaborators, users etc). Find and bring together the stakeholders (teams of design, engineering, management etc.) early in the process to explore the potential of the product and prepare the roadmap.

Main Takeaways Having an infrastructure for prototyping and testing is an advantage for rapid iterations in development, saving time and resources. University labs and facilities are important resources for supporting industry, the framework for collaboration should be well defined for ease of accessibility.
