Parts of the Skeletal System
The Skeleton The skeleton forms the framework of the body Comprised of 206 bones grouped into two main parts 1. The axial skeleton 2. The appendicular skeleton
The Axial Skeleton Forms the main core of the skeletal system and is more rigid than the appendicular skeleton. Comprising of: Vertabral column (spine) Cranium (skull) Thoracic (rib cage) Sternum (breast bone)
The Appendicular Skeleton Comprises of the shoulder girdle & the pelvic girdle Clavicle (collar bone) Scapula (shoulder blade) Arms Pelvic bone Legs

Spine It is made up of 33 small bones called vertebrae. Between each vertebra there is a pad of cartilage which allows movement and prevents the bones grinding together. We refer to the pad of cartilage between each vertebrae as a disc.
Tendons Connect muscle to bone Tough, but flexible Enable you to move – ‘middle man’ between muscle and bone
Ligaments Connect bone to bone Stabilize joints Elastic Can be lengthened by stretching Prevents injury
Synovial Fluid Is found at the joint (where to bones meet). It is a lubricating fluid allowing smooth movement of bones at the joint.
