Ice Breaker!!!!

Topic of the Day: Violence Reduction Is there too much violence in the media? Do TV and movies make people buy products with violent messages, like music and magazines? Why do people enjoy watching “bloods-and-gut” movies? Should we tone down kids’ programs that show cartoon characters being hit over the head or run over?

Topic of the Day: Violence Reduction What are some violent messages that can be received from television, movies, magazines and video games? Do you think people go out and become violent when they see these images? How is violence promoted in the music you listen to?

Definition of “Violence” According to Merriam Webster: The use of force in a way that harms a person or property. Great force or energy especially of a destructive kind.

Activity 1: Media Violence Messages List some violent messages give by TV, movies and videos. The first one is an example. For these purposes don’t worry about grammar and spelling. Just do the best you can. The main idea is for you to participate.

Discuss your answer with the rest of the group. What do you think? What are your views of violence in the media? Discuss your answer with the rest of the group. Yeas or No: There is too much violence. It should be limited. Yes or No: If we do this, are we giving up freedom?

ACTIVITY 2: Cycle of Violence What do you think of the phrase… “violence causes more violence”

Conclusions Steps to Avoid Violence Recognize situations or events that are likely to escalate into violence. If you can't control your anger, get away. Take a time out. Think about the options and consequences of your actions. For example, hitting someone could result in suspension from school or injury. Respond with your HEAD – not your fists, threats, or weapons.
