Cool stuff that you can use with students! Library 101 The catalog Cool stuff that you can use with students!

OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog) Getting Started: Go to http://nsd-libapp.nashua.edu Here is the homepage Note that you can get to the Catalog from here (See the file tab at the top) You can also visit the Library Sharepoint site Or check out the databases here (ask for passwords.) How is that for one-stop shopping?

Now you are ready to search for materials! Look at all these great limiters in the advanced search!!! You can start here: Search by title, author, subject (this contains controlled language) , series, or note

You can limit by this and this and this! You can select: What words to search Where the item is held What type of item you want Films? Books? Audios? WOW

And you can limit by this and this and this! You can select: When the book was published Interest and reading levels Lexiles Double WOW

What the heck is a Lexile? Lexiles measure the developmental ability of a reader and the difficulty of a text on the same scale so that it is easy to match readers with materials that won’t frustrate them. The Screwtape Letters Treasure Island Alice in Wonderland Redwall My Teacher is an Alien Strega Nona Meets Her Match Franklin is Messy Danny and the Dinosaur 200L

What does that mean to us? While we do not appear to have any source of getting Lexile Reader Measures, Lexiles can still be helpful to us. If you know the approximate reading level of a student, you can use this chart to determine what Text Measure you should target for that student. Remember, don’t limit a reader to a book within a Lexile range. Students can vary in their ability to comprehend material depending on their foundation knowledge and interest levels. Not all books in our system have Lexiles For more information on Lexiles go to: lexile.com Grade Level Reader Measures Text Measures (Lexile Range) 1 up to 300L 200L to 400L 2 140L to 500L 300L to 500L 3 330L to 700L 500L to 700L 4 445L to 810L 650L to 850L 5 565L to 910L 750L to 950L 6 665L to 1000L 850L to 1050L 7 735L to 1065L 950L to 1075 L 8 805L to 1100L 1000L to 1100L 9 855L to 1165L 1050L to 1150L 10 905L to 1195L 1100L to 1200L 11-12 940L to 1210L 1100L to 1300L Chart is from EBSCO: http://support.epnet.com/training/novelist/NLC/InfoPages/Lexiles.htm
