Agenda Participants will learn the best ways to make sure that OnDemand runs efficiently.  I will share the optimal settings for internet speed, router types and set up, and discuss other external and internal issues that can potentially create problems with any OnDemand environment.  Participants are encouraged to share their individual success stories as well.

Top Complaints “OnDemand is slow” “I get disconnected all the time”

Agenda Consider, Discuss, Explore, Explain…. difference between a website and OnDemand bandwidth needs ISP Commitments and contracts bandwidth hogs router types and configs monitoring options software clients wired vs wireless device creep ** Bonus Material, if time permits

Persistent Connections

Bandwidth Needs OnDemand uses the RXP protocol. By technical specification, the networked connection requires 16 Kbps per user we suggest 30 kbps up and down FORMULA Lowest Bandwidth between up and down / 30 = number of consistent OD users **High latency is generally more harmful that low throughput.

Other Bandwidth Users Who else uses the bandwidth ? Are you using online backup tools? Do you have security cameras? Are you phones VoIP? Do you stream sermons? Other streaming services? Guest wireless? Same ISP connection?

Bottleneck?

Router Types ** Scalable Maximum connections/users to the internet - don’t confuse the two… *sufficiently secure redundant connections to the internet range of wireless SNMP monitoring Other Features QoS, VPN, guest networks, parental controls,

Maximum Connections Slide from dean’s home Max connections…. Number of Devices PER PERSON 11:30am 11:30pm

Router Configs Routers – Class of Service QOS - Some call it Class of Service (COS), Quality of Service (QOS), Low Latency Queuing (LLQ), and even Class-Based weighted fair queuing (CBWFQ) CIR – Committed Information Rate or Reserved Bandwidth Image: http://blogs.salleurl.edu/raising-a-data-center/files/2013/04/qos.jpg

Wireless Range Routers – Wireless range. Wired vs Wireless Closer to ZERO is better!

Monitoring Monitor needs to happen per minute and preferably every 5 seconds Remember persistent connection has to have latency less than 500ms. You won’t find it unless you monitor every few seconds

Monitoring our ISP Well.. One of our ISPs

Monitoring OnDemand

A Bad Day

Just for Fun

Back to Monitoring Time and Location are a suspect Is there a time that things are faster? Do you connect at home?   Does the organization use the same provider as you do at home? Is there a difference in connection status?
