Technology Of: Game Engines Innovation and opportunity One of the greatest innovations game engines brought was giving developers reusable components to utilize as frameworks for their game. The introduction of VR adds an entirely new dimension to the gaming experience by immersing players (and devs) into their fantasy worlds. Many game engines have ‘asset stores’ which allow devs to purchase GE add-ons from other devs in the community. “Game Engine” is the name given to the free or paid-for programs that companies or individuals use to create games. These programs are built on libraries with functions, classes and other data defined by other game developers. By using libraries created by someone else, an individual can use “x” game engine to create a new game. 17% Mkt Share Risks/Drawbacks Game engines themselves do not pose obvious risk to society. They are tools to realize a creative vision. As gaming becomes more accessible to a larger, more casual audience, experts have documented their potential for abuse. “Pathological gaming” is persistent and recurrent inability to control excessive gaming habits despite associated social and/or emotional problems(NCBI). One conservative study reported that 8.5% of adolescents were ‘addicted’ to gaming(ISU). Starting with Pong (1972), Pop culture has been influenced by gaming for over 30 years. Unreal 4, Unity 5, CryEngine, Source, and GameMaker are engines used to develop some of the most popular gaming franchises. Technical details of this technology Impact of this technology on society, both present day and future Long term prospects, including related technologies that might be developed Risks or drawbacks of this technology These programs are built on libraries with functions, classes and other data defined by computer programming languages. By using data that has already been created by someone else, an individual can use “x” game engine to create a new game. The main benefit that game engines provide is the fact that it saves coding everything from scratch. 45% Mkt Share
