Freshmen Romeo and Juliet Q2W4

Romeo and Juliet Act I Quiz: No talking or using your book Once finished, turn in and silently read

Study Guide: What do you notice about the structure of the prologue? Hints: Tone = the attitude of the author Circle/highlight words with strong connotations. Foreshadowing Predicting

Summary Act I Scene 1: -Two well-written summarizing sentences. Scene 1 -Montagues and Capulets almost fight in the street and get a warning to never disrupt the peace again or they will be killed. -Romeo talks with Benvolio about how heartbroken he is over Rosaline.

Pun:  is a form of word play that suggests two or more meanings, by exploiting multiple meanings of words, or of similar-sounding words, for an intended humorous or rhetorical effect.

Pun Example: Textual Evidence: Annotations: Sampson. Gregory, o' my word, we'll not carry coals. Gregory. No, for then we should be colliers. Sampson. I mean, an we be in choler, we'll draw. Gregory. Ay, while you live, draw your neck out o' the collar.  (1.1.1-4) Gregory is using puns– similar sounding words on purpose for word play. -Sampson is being serious: Carry coals= submit to insult Colliers= put up with insult Choler = anger Collar = hangman’s noose

Characterization: Character: Textual Evidence: What it reveals: Sampson “No, sir, I do not bite my thumb at you sir, but I bite my thumb sir” (1.1.46-47). Bite my thumb = flipping someone off. He is an immature coward because he won’t admit he use an obscene gesture at him because he doesn’t want to get in trouble.

Tuesday

Character Collages: Your group will get to pick one character from the cup and will be in charge of that character for the rest of the play (Romeo, Juliet, Benvolio, Tybalt, Mercutio, Capulet, Paris, Nurse, Friar Lawrence) You will be required to add to that character each week with new quotes from the play You need to make a collage of pictures to represent this character, identify their personal flaw, the literary devices they use, and how they contributed to the tragic ending

Summary Act I Scene 2: Scene 2 -Paris talks to Capulet about marrying Juliet; however, Capulet _______________________. -Romeo discovers the plan for Capulet’s party when an illiterate _____________ is sent with a list to invite people.

Act I Scene 2 Textual Evidence: Annotations: CAPULET  But saying o'er what I have said before.  My child is yet a stranger in the world.  She hath not seen the change of fourteen years.  Let two more summers wither in their pride.  Ere we may think her ripe to be a bride. PARIS  Younger than she are happy mothers made.  (1.2.7-12) What does this reveal about Capulet’s feelings about his daughter? He thinks she is too young to get married and is trying to protect her. She is only 13 and needs to wait two more years to be married. What does it reveal about the time period? Women got married and had children a lot younger than today.

Summary Act I Scene 3: Scene 3 -Lady Capulet, Nurse, and Juliet all discuss and joke about ______________________. -Mom tells Juliet to check _______________at the party.

Using textual evidence, how does Shakespeare characterize the nurse in Act 1 scene 3? Textual evidence hints: “now by my maidenhead at twelve years old” (1.3.3). -- implying she lost her virginity at 13 “Thou wilt fall backward when thou hast more wit” (1.3.43). --joking about Juliet having sex

Summary Act I Scene 4: Scene 4 -______________, _____________, and __________ are getting ready for the Capulet party. -Mercutio tries to convince Romeo to get over ___________ with an intense speech about love.

Act I scene 4 Textual Evidence: Annotations: MERCUTIO “If love be rough with you, be rough with love. Prick love for pricking, and you beat love down.— Give me a case to put my visage in! A visor for a visor.—What care I What curious eye doth cote deformities? Here are the beetle brows shall blush for me” (1.4.27-32). “prick love for pricking” = Basically you need to have sex with other women to get over your heartache. -case for my visage = mask for my face to cover up my ugliness

Summary Act I Scene 5: Scene 5 -Romeo and his friends go to the Capulet party and get discovered by ___________, but they are left alone by orders from Capulet. -_________ and ________ meet, talk briefly, and kiss twice, but both find out they are from enemy families.

Extended Metaphor: The term extended metaphor refers to a comparison between two unlike things that continues throughout a series of sentences in a paragraph or lines in a poem. It is often comprised of more than one sentence and sometimes consists of a full paragraph. Juliet = saint Romeo = pilgrim

Romeo’s Paradoxical Diction paradox –noun 3. any person, thing, or situation exhibiting an apparently contradictory nature. 1) How could you say that Romeo himself is an example of entry #3 in the definition of paradox? What is Shakespeare’s purpose in characterizing Romeo a paradox? (this is your essay topic tomorrow)

Friday

Essay Expectations: Prompt: How and why does Shakespeare portray Romeo as a flawed hero? Need a strong claim with specific literary device(s) identified and their purpose Example claim: In order to characterize Romeo as a flawed hero early in the play, Shakespeare has Romeo use paradoxical diction to demonstrate his conflicted nature and his inability to reconcile his inner demons, which highlights the superficiality of his love for Juliet. Need at least 2-3 correctly cited quotes
