Wessex Basketball Association Pre-Season Referee/Coaches Meeting Tuesday 19th September 2017 Wessex Basketball

Ian Lester Level 4 Referee Technical Secretary Southern Region Contact Ian Lester Level 4 Referee Technical Secretary Southern Region Wessex Basketball

Not all contact is a foul! You have probably heard this before but it is inevitable that when 10 athletic basketball players are moving around the court that contact will happen. Not all contact is a foul! Determining what is legal or illegal contact is part of your development as an official. The ability to recongnise and judge the consequences of contact determines which officials will progress in the game. Wessex Basketball

Players and coaches will adjust if the officiating is consistent. With all contact that is illegal the officials must address it from the beginning of the game and call it consistently throughout the whole game. Players and coaches will adjust if the officiating is consistent. Wessex Basketball

Handchecking This is the illegal use of the hand(s)/Arm(s) to impede or influence the movement or progress of an opponent with or without the ball. A defensive player facing his opponent has no reason to place his hand(s) on an opponent. Defence should be played with the feet. Under no circumstances may the defender place two hands on an opponent even within his cylinder Wessex Basketball

Screening Understand the purpose of screening, ie to prevent an opponent from reaching a desired position on the court. Not every contact with a screen is illegal. If the screen is set legally contact should be considered incidental. When setting an Open screen the person may stand as close as possinble without causing contactat either the side or front of the opponent (in vision) Wessex Basketball

Screening.. If a screen is set outside of vision ie Blind, the screener must take a position which allows his opponent to make a normal movement (1 step) to avoid contact. If the opponent is moving the screen must be set to account for elements of time and distance (1-2 steps) for the opponent to stop or change direction. Wessex Basketball

Charge Block The most contest of all calls as the margins are normally tight. Understand what a legal guarding position is… It requires the defender to be on the spot first with both feet on the ground. Once establish they can then move backwards and laterally to maintain his position in front of the attacker He is not allowed to step FORWARD to the player Referee the defence! Wessex Basketball

Unsportsmanlike foul Charge block…. Be alert to flopping look for the contact and if refereeing the defender he maybe sitting back on his heels anticipating the contact. Unsportsmanlike foul FIBA Presentation. Wessex Basketball
