“Meet the Coaches Night” Long Branch Middle School Wrestling December 4, 2014

Meet the Coaches Head Coach: Louis P. De Angelis Assistant Coach: Kevin Mammano Assistant Coach: Joe Simon

Coaching Philosophy Respect the sport of wrestling – Teammates Coaches School Self Academics take priority over any extra curricular activity. Being on the wrestling team, or any extra curricular activity, is a privilege. Wins and losses are counted, but do not represent the numerous life lessons learned throughout a season.

Procedures for Making the Team Any student who is academically eligible, with no disciplinary infractions, can compete on our team. Maintaining grades, staying out of “trouble,” arriving to school on time, attending practice everyday, and putting forth effort. Practice success & wrestle-offs determine a “starting” team.

Procedures for Making the Team A wrestle-off occurs when two or more wrestlers sign up for a particular weight class. Regulation four-minute match, refereed by coaches. Practice Success = ability to score points throughout practice against those in weight class. It is also important to note that just because a wrestler is not a “starter” does not mean that they will not wrestle during matches.

Captain Selection Process Captains are not always the best wrestlers, but they are wrestlers who their teammates respect and listen to. Leading the team, running the warm-up portion of our practice, and motivating teammates. An extension of the coaching staff. In some, but not all cases, captains have been on the team for three years and always demonstrate a commitment to the team in season and in the off-season.

Attendance Policy Wrestlers are expected to attend every practice and match, no exceptions. Wrestlers who have five unexcused absences will be dismissed from the team.

Health Concerns/Misconceptions Follow common sense procedures to easily prevent any skin conditions. Our team practices weight maintenance. Maintaining weight is a major aspect of the sport – it is not something that can be negotiated. 70 75 80 85 90 95 100 105 110 115 120 126 132 138 144 150 158 170 185 HWT

Practice Over Winter Break December 22 – Practice – 9 am to 11 am December 26 – Practice – 9 am to 11 am December 27 – Match – Bus Leaves 8:15 am December 29 – Practice – 9 am to 11 am December 30 – Tour – Bus Leaves 6 am

End of Season Honors There is a wrestling dinner, combined with the high school team, at the end of every season. At this dinner, every wrestler/manager who has completed a full season is awarded a certificate for being a part of our team. There are also special individual awards given out that night. These awards range from academic honors to specific wrestling honors.

In the past, there has been a wonderful rapport between the parents/guardians and the coaches. Our parents/guardians are supportive, packing the stands at both our home and away matches. You are vital to our success and their support is irreplaceable.
