Ralph Waldo Emerson Ralph Waldo Emerson, known professionally as Waldo Emerson, was an American essayist, lecturer, and poet who led the Transcendentalist movement of the mid-19th century.

Henry David Thoreau Since Thoreau's graduation from Harvard, he had become a protégé and an informal student of Emerson's Transcendental ideas. Emerson was by then already one of the most famous American philosophers and men of letters.

From the NYTimes, 11/19/16 “If you’re serious about making an impact in the world, power down your smartphone, close your browser tabs, roll up your sleeves and get to work.” Carl Newport

DO NOW OPTIONS Record how much time you spent on your phone yesterday. How much of it was for work/school and how much of it was for recreation? What do you think this time spent says about you? Are you a Transcendentalist? Explain. “The very basic core of a man’s living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences”. What new experiences/encounter have brought you joy?

ROMANTIC OR TRANSCENDENTAL? “Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could, some blunders and absurdities have crept in, forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; you shall begin it serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense.”

ROMANTIC OR TRANSCENDENTAL? “They who dream by day are cognizant of many things which escape those who dream only be night”

ROMANTIC OR TRANSCENDENTAL? “Whatever course you decide upon, there is always someone to tell you that you are wrong. There are always difficulties arising which tempt you to believe that your critics are right. To map out a course of action and follow it to an end requires courage.”
