Interior Design I Mrs. Myers 2013-2014 Ancient Housing Interior Design I Mrs. Myers 2013-2014

Why did people build these types of houses? What were they thinking? Yurts: Igloos:

Ancient Housing Log Cabins: Teepees

What made these types of houses work for these people? Yurts Igloos 12 ft. in diameter Made of light weight wood saplings then covered with felted animal skins. Creatively designed so they could be moved easily. Considered temporary housing. Made from blocks of snow with a hole left in the top for ventilation. Could have a window made of ice or seal intestines and a door made of sealskin. Accommodated one family.

Ancient Homes Log Cabins Tipis or Teepees Quick to build and relatively inexpensive because they used materials found on the land. Considered more of a permanent home. Conical in shape easily transportable. Made from saplings and canvas or animal skins. Worked well in both harsh winters and hot summers.

Questions??? Why did these types of homes work so well at the time? How did it fit in with the lifestyles of these families? Describe one of the types of homes described. What were the aspects of the building materials used and why were these important?

Now…… You are to build a model of an ancient home with your group. Remember you will be presenting the model; you will need to research the type of home and do a report on that home. Give lots of details like: where would you find a home like this. What time in history was this prevalent? How was it built: what were the building materials. Who would have used this? And any other information that we need to know about that structure. Some of the other structures are located in Egypt, out west in America, Hawaii, and many others.
