Branching ratio B(J/ψ→ηcγ) Interesting to measure because it is a transition between 1S states of charmonium and its rate can be easily calculated in potential models. But we have noticeable difference between theoretical predictions and experimental data. Until last year the PDG value of this branching was based on the measurement of Crystal Ball with the result approximately twice less than theoretical predictions (for E1 transitions difference is (20-30)% only). In 2009 CLEO published a new measurement with the value closer to theory. Theory : (3.05±0.07)% potential model : E.Eichten et al., “Quarkonia and their transitions”, arXiv:hep-ph/0701208v1 (2007) (2.4±0.3)% QCD sum rules : V.A.Beilin, A.V.Radyushkin, “Borelized Sum Rules For The Radiative Decays Of Charmonium In Qcd” (In Russian). Photon spectrum in J/ψ→ηcγ decay Photon spectrum can be written in the form : where g(ω,ω’) – calorimeter response function, ε(ω) –photon detection efficiency, M=<ηc|j0(ωr/2)|J/ψ>→1 when ω→0. CLEO used |M|2=exp(-ω2/8β2) with β=65 MeV, but this is valid only for harmonic oscillator wave functions. For all other potentials dependence will be ~ ω-n.

Our fit of CLEO data We tried to fit the CLEO data using another line shape : at small photon energy ω ~ ω0 decay probability dГ/dω ~ ω3; at ω >> ω0 factor ω3 → ω dГ/dω dependence can be written for example in such a form : dГ/dω ~ ω3ω02/(ωω0+(ω-ω0)2). This function ≈ ω3 at ω ~ ω0, and ~ ω at ω >> ω0. We found that this line shape is also suitable. Fig.1 Fit of CLEO data with ω02/(ωω0+(ω-ω0)2) function Function M(ηC), MeV Г(ηC), MeV χ2/NDF (C.L.) ω3exp(-ω2/8β2), β=65MeV 2982.4±0.7 32.5±1.8 6142±430 38.0/38 (0.47) ω3ω02/(ω0ω+(ω-ω0)2) 2981.8±0.5 33.6±1.9 6494±362 39.1/39 (0.47)

VEPP-4M collider Wide energy range Ebeam=1÷6 GeV Peak luminosity 1.5×1030 cm-2s-1 at J/ψ Precise beam energy determination : Resonant Depolarization Method, σE ≈ 1.5 keV Interpolation for DAQ runs σE ≈ 8÷30 keV IR-light Compton BackScattering, σE < 100 keV

KEDR detector Vacuum chamber Vertex detector Drift chamber Threshold aerogel counters ToF-counters Liquid krypton calorimeter Superconducting coil (0.65 T) Magnet yoke Muon tubes CsI-calorimeter Compensation solenoid VEPP-4M quadrupole Luminosity is measured by single Bremsstrahlung in e+ and e- directions and by Bhabha scattering Scattering electron tagging system for two-photon studies

KEDR data Data were taken during 2007-2009 years : Integrated luminosity at J/ψ peak L = 1.52 ± 0.08 pb-1 is collected. 3 J/ψ scans were performed; measured beam energy spread was used for calculation of the number of J/ψ produced : Nψ = 5.2 ± 0.3 M At the first step multihadron decays of J/ψ were selected. These cuts effectively suppress background from cosmic rays, beam-gas interactions and QED events : Total energy in clusters EΣ > 0.8 GeV Number of clusters with Ecl > 30 MeV Ncl > 3 Number of central DC tracks NtrackIP > 0 No muon tubes activated in 3-rd layer NMU3 = 0 At the second step photons in these events were identified. Photon is a cluster in liquid krypton calorimeter without tracks in DC attached to it and without TOF scintillator counters activated before cluster : Angle between cluster and beam direction Θ > 45° No tracks in drift chamber (DC) attached to cluster No time of flight (ToF) scintillator counters activated before cluster Selection efficiency (MC) : ε, % J/ψ decays 89 J/ψ→ηcγ decays 94 Photon in J/ψ→ηcγ decay 34

Inclusive spectra Fig 1. Inclusive spectra: blue - spectrum of all clusters; red - photon spectrum; black - spectrum of charged particles, when ToF scintillator counter is activated before cluster and DC track is attached to cluster. The last was used for elimination of charged particles which were detected as neutral from the photon spectrum.

KEDR data fit Inclusive photon spectrum was fit by the sum of the signal having a shape convolved with calorimeter response function (Novosibirsk PDF - asymmetric Gaussian with σE=8.8 MeV at 110 MeV and a=-0.3) and background Background has a form exp(a0+a1ω+a2ω2) + A∙MIP(ω), where MIP(ω) is the spectrum of charged (histogram) Fig.1 Fit with f(ω) = ω02/(ωω0+(ω-ω0)2)

Fits with various signal shapes BW alone gives shifted value of ηс mass M(ηC)=2975.9 ±1.3 BW∙ω3 gives better form near resonance, but leads to an unphysical diverging tail at higher photon energies Last two functions give close results of fits, and difference may be used for estimation of systematic error appearing due to unknown line shape. Results (preliminary) ηC mass (MeV) ηC width (MeV) B(J/ψ→ηcγ) PDG M(ηc) = 2979.4 ± 1.5 ± 1.8 MeV 2980.5 ± 1.2 MeV Г(ηc) = 27.8 ± 5.1 ± 3.3 MeV 27.4 ± 2.9 MeV B(J/ψ→ηcγ) = (2.67 ± 0.17 ± 0.39 )% (1.7 ± 0.4)%

Conclusions A new direct measurement of J/ψ→ηcγ decay was performed. The branching value of this decay is sensitive to the line shape, which is asymmetric. Our result on B(J/ψ→ηcγ) is consistent with that of CLEO, is higher than the old Crystal Ball value and close to theoretical predictions.
