ORLA 5532 Program Development: Curriculum, Learning & Assessment Instructors: Sherrish Holloman, Welton Kwong, Stephanie McCall, & Robert J. Monson 2009-10

Summer Session 1 “What do children learn?” Learning for the 21st century Dewey and Hirsh Content v. skills Rigorous v. difficult

Summer Session 2 “How do children learn?” Aligning instruction with mission/vision Clarity and evidence of engagement Professional conversations about pedagogy

Fall Inquiries “How do we know if children are learning at optimal levels?” Journal #1: Standardized Testing Journal #2: Classroom Assessments Paper: Synthesizing the 3 questions

Conversation Prompts Think back to your journals and paper from the Fall…. What did you learn? Share a few highlights. What was surprising? What was contradictory to your previous views on curriculum, instruction and assessment? How, if at all, did your work resonate with the video? Anything else?

Our Objectives for Friday, Feb 5 To share our reactions about the curriculum conversations we had with teacher colleagues this fall. Become familiar with basic concepts about curriculum leadership (formative v. summative assessment; types of knowledge; essential questions). To examine work samples using these concepts. To become aware of instructional leadership strategies.

Connecting 5532 and your New School Application Curriculum Map (“What do students learn?”) What is the balance between skills and content for 21st century learning? What are the State standards? How rigorous is the curriculum? Unit & Lesson Plans (“How do students learn?”) What is required for “clarity” in instruction? How do teachers engage their students? What are the pedagogical best practices? Assessment (“How do we know if students are learning at optimal levels?”) What kinds of knowledge are being assessed? What makes an assessment “good”? For successful completion, what must have taken place in the preceding instruction?
