IR implementation at the University of Venda, South Africa Vusani and Frederick

Software selection-why D-Space Its free Used by most universities in South Africa and the National Research Foundation

Advantages It’s a free open source software Can be customized to fit the institutional needs e.g configurable database ,local authentication mechanisms Can manage all types of digital content A huge number of institutions using the software

Disadvantages/Stumbling blocks thus far? Lack of training on operating and administering the whole system Dependent on third parties for customisation Servers not being upgraded

Future perspectives Continued use of D-Space---financial sustainability (it is free). Slowly the library hopes to work towards meeting the standards that will make our IR a trusted repository. The nature of documents being deposited will increase in the future to include images, audio files, etc. A big aspect looking into the future is research data curation

Country situation on IRs 26 state universities 18 are using D-Space 1 Eprints 1 Vital 1 Digital Commons 1 Content Pro 2? 2 don’t have (newly formed universities 7 research agencies
