Hephaestus was the god of blacksmiths and metalworkers Hephaestus was the god of blacksmiths and metalworkers. His Roman name was Vulcan. His symbols were a hammer and tongs. He worked in a forge inside the volcano, Mount Etna in Sicily, where he was assisted by the Cyclopes. Hephaestus was lame but Zeus married him to beautiful Aphrodite. She loved Ares and Hephaestus once trapped them together in a net of bronze.
