Safety and Danger Gun control

Agenda 1. Presentations 2. Cycle of Gun Usage 3. Sandy Hook

Columbine The Columbine High School massacre was a school shooting that occurred on April 20, 1999, at Columbine High School in Colorado. In addition to the shootings, the complex and highly planned attack involved a fire bomb to divert firefighters, propane tanks converted to bombs placed in the cafeteria, 99 explosive devices, and carbombs The massacre sparked debate over gun control laws, high school cliques, subcultures and bullying. It resulted in an increased emphasis on school security with zero tolerance policies, and a moral panic over goth culture, gun culture, social outcasts, the use of pharmaceutical anti-depressants by teenagers, teenage Internet use and violence in video games.

The Cycle of Guns in the US 1. You will have 5-6 minutes at each station 2. Read the article at your station 3. Write a 1-2 sentence summary of the main idea of your article in a circle 4. Discuss the article with your group. Anything surprise you? Causes/ effects? Etc. 5. Move to the next station and repeat steps 2-3 in the next circle of the cycle

The Cycle of Gun Control in the US - Debrief 1. What important information did you learn from the 4 articles? 2. Look at your cycle. Do any patterns stand out? What? Explain. 3. How do you think this cycle can be broken?

America’s view on gun control vs Australia

Debrief 1. Reflections on the video- did you find anything surprising (or not really)? What? Why? 2. WHY do you think some American lawmakers are so resistant to changes gun control laws? 3. Can you think of any other scenarios in which law makers completely ignore facts to “push their own agenda(do what they want to do)?”

Gun Violence in 2015

Sandy Hook On December 14, 2012, a young man shot his mother in the face, then took her (legally registered) guns to Sandy Hook Elementary School and entered a kindergarten/ 1st grade class and began to open fire. This shooting brought the debate over gun control to the forefront more than it had ever been before.

Reactions There were a wide range of reactions to the Sandy Hook tragedy, including quite a large amount of people (a professional athlete, news anchor, and tenured Florida State professor included) who believed that it was a hoax… But mostly, people had very different opinions about (1) WHY this happened and (2) WHAT should be done. You and your group will be given an actual Facebook comment published after the shooting. Please: 1) Read the comment 2) Discuss whether you agree/ disagree with the comment with your group 3) Develop a discussion question based on the comment to present to the rest of the class. Your question should prompt conversation and be open ended.

Executive Decision According to the documentary Bowling for Columbine, where did the shooters in the Columbine shooting legally purchase their guns? Gun Show loophole- Under federal law, private-party sellers are not required to perform background checks on buyers, record the sale, or ask for identification  “any person may sell a firearm to an unlicensed resident of the State where he resides as long as he does not know or have reasonable cause to believe the person is prohibited from receiving or possessing firearms“ Executive order- a rule or order issued by the President to an executive branch of the government and having the force of law. The legislative body is not required to approve any executive order, nor can it overturn an order.  http://edition.cnn.com/2016/01/05/politics/obama-executive-action-gun-control/
