Portrait by Shaina MacDonagh VALUE: the lightness or darkness of a color. Value Scale: a range of values from dark to light. Value, day 1

Draw a value scale with at least 6 values 1. Draw a value scale with at least 6 values have students draw value scales in sketchbooks, while they work look for 6 levels of value and help those who need it. 5 - 10 min

2. Watch the video linked to the diagram (must be in slideshow), then draw a sphere in full value. Label the parts of the sphere, as shown on the image. *If the video doesn’t work, read the text on the website.* Play video, then demo with document camera or play video again while they start to draw in sketchbooks. Check drawings as they work. 10 - 15 min

Drawing from a grid The grid method involves drawing a grid over your reference photo, and then drawing a grid of equal ratio on your work surface (paper, canvas, wood panel, etc). Then you draw the image on your work surface, focusing on one square at a time, until the entire image has been transferred. Once you're finished, you simply erase or paint over the grid lines, and start working on your painting, which will be now be in perfect proportion! Yay. Materials: ruler, a paper copy of your reference image, pencil and a work surface.

3. DRAW SPIDERMAN USING THE GRID TRANSFER/ENLARGEMENT METHOD. THE REFERENCE IMAGE GRID IS 1” x 1”. YOUR GRID SHOULD BE 1” x 1”. (No groups) 20 POINTS POSSIBLE

4. Composition In the visual arts, composition is the placement or arrangement of visual elements or ingredients in a work of art, as distinct from the subject. It can also be thought of as the organization of the elements of art according to the principles of art. Click on the link and read the tips: 12 tips to improve your artistic composition *Create a list of the 12 tips to improve your artistic composition and explain the tips in YOUR own words. (No groups) 10 POINTS POSSIBLE

Contour Drawing In contour drawing the artists focuses on drawing the outlines and interior lines that describe an object. It’s a good way to really observe an object. Demo contour drawing, mention using pencil to compare proportions and how line weight/ variety creates interest and movement. Have students complete a full page contour drawing in sketch book. 10 - 15 minutes

Object Contour Drawing 5. Pick 1 or more objects from your backpack or the classroom. Photograph it to think about composition. Contour exercise Draw on a 9” X 12” piece of drawing paper. The composition should fill the page. Make sure your drawing in proportional. Use your measuring/sizing techniques to check your progress. (this is an individual drawing, no partners) 20 POINTS POSSIBLE

Value Drawing 6. 100 points possible -Now draw a still life of different group of objects (min. 5), of your choice, in full value. -Choose something interesting to you. -You can draw from observation or do a grid enlargement. Remember that your reference and drawing should be of equal ratio if you do a grid enlargement. -You should use at least 6 levels of value in your work. -Remember to think about composition. -Take into consideration background details. -Drawing should be on a 12” X18” piece of drawing paper. 100 points possible Talk about why drawing example has an effective composition. Have students use cell phones or view-finders to plan composition (take 3 photos), then start drawing in sketchbook (full page). Students should spend the rest for class time drawing.
