What mass of methane could be produced from 10 grams of hydrogen?

What mass of methane could be produced from 10 grams of hydrogen? Five steps to the answer [1] produce a balanced equation 2H2 + C  CH4 [2] Identify frog path

[3] convert mass of reactant to moles of reactant Moles = Mig GFm Moles = 10g 2g/mol = 5 moles

Moles X = Mole Y Coeff X Coeff Y [4] use the mole ratio from the balanced equation to convert moles of reactant to moles of product 2H2 + C  1CH4 So 5 moles of H2 = 2.5 moles of CH4 Moles X = Mole Y Coeff X Coeff Y

Step 5 Covert moles of product to mass of product Moles = mass in grams RMM mass in grams =Moles x GFM = 2.5 x 16 = 40grams of CH4

Mass in grams Mass in grams Moles Moles Volume of gas Volume of gas This side is given in the problem This side is asked for by the problem Mass in grams Mass in grams Divide by molar mass Multiply by molar mass Use molar ratio from the balanced equation Moles Moles Volume of gas Volume of gas # of particles # of particles

Key take away: Process = Reactants Mass  Mole Products Mole  Mole Mole  mass
