The Millennial Generation Children born ~1980-2000 According to generational studies experts, shares characteristics with the WWII generation (the “Greatest Generation”) including: better behavior see commonalities instead of differences play by the rules, and achieve great things Signs of this changing youth trend can be found in all major juvenile crime indicators. Violent crime, property crime, and weapons violations by today’s youth are all at record lows.

Public Schools are Outperforming Private Schools New report from U.S. Department of Education The average for public schools on NAEP was significantly higher than the average for private schools for grade 4 mathematics when adjusted for student characteristics Unadjusted scores were higher for private schools

Schools Are Safer Than Ever for Children Incidences of school crime have decreased over the past decade. Between 1992 and 2001, the rate of non-fatal violent crimes and assault against students dropped from 48 per 1000 students to 28 per 1000. Homicides on school premises also dropped from 34 in 1992 to 14 in 2001.

Student Body More Diverse Than Ever Nationwide… More than one-third of public school students are from low-income families. One in ten public school students is an English language learner English language learners are the fastest-growing population in U.S. public schools About one school-age child in five is a child of immigrants About a quarter of those children are foreign-born themselves Almost 14 percent of public school students receive special education services About ¾ of those are educated in regular classrooms for a significant part of the school day Source: Center on Education Policy, A Public Education Primer, 2006
